My new shed is finally ready. It was a long time comming but at last. We are moving them over this weekend. Have enclosed pictures of my pidgies new home. Thanks for all advice given over this last 8 months since my lovely grandad passed away. Have also enclosed a certificate and a picture i found from when my grandad used to breed em and let em out every day xxxx

Hi Wayne Looks like you were right. When I went to feed my birdies yesterday there were 4 slugs in Drop Wings food. Not nice. Its a bit difficult as when I'm not flying I can take thier food out over night but obviously when I'm away and my mum comes over to do their food and water I cant really expect her to come back at night to take the food out. As a precaution I think I'd better de worm them. Any suggestions on what to use? The good news is that the new shed is nearly done. The boxes are done now but I'm having partitions put in incase they start fighting when they are all put back in together so there is just a bit left to do. The new shed at my mums with Chicken Legs and One Eye does not seem to have a slug problem as I dont think the slugs can get in there. Once again thanks for all your advice Nikki xx :K)

Bleugh!! i hope not - thanks for your thoughts i'll try taking their feed out at night cos it is in the morning when I feed them that i notice it xx I'm doing fine after my accident. My shoulder is a bit stiff still having physio but am back flying now which is good as I was getting bored and skint lol xx 8)

Thats great i'll let you know as soon as i've spoken to my stepdad xxxx

Hi there I could do with some of those for boxes. I have just put a new shed up but have yet to make the boxes. I need to speak to my step dad as he will know how much I need. DO you have any left hun? Many thanks Nikki xx
-
Hi there, no the shed is up but I'm in the process of getting the boxes done. I'm relying on my stepdad to do it & the poor fella is ALWAYS in demand from one member of my family or another so I dont want to push the point too much. It should definitely be in the next couple of weeks. We have decided that Blackie, Drop Wing and Chicken Legs will go in together and Old One Eye will stay at my mums. I dont think she could survive another move. The poor old girl (well I think shes a girl - she always seems very girly lol!!!) can hardly stand any more. She can fly from her perch to the box where her food is but that really is about it. She's still very happy though and not in any pain just her poor little body aint quite what it used to be. I wanted to ask, sometimes when I change their food I notice that there is this clear stuff over it that kind of sticks the food together. Is this anything I have to worry about or is it normal. I've only noticed it recently. Bugger, as I'm writing this that little white cat has snuck up onto the roof, I'm off to get my water pistol!!!! Many thanks guys xxx

Hi there, thanks for your reply. Grandad had them tame before he got ill but for the last couple of years he was too ill to walk down to the shed very often. Me and my mum used to go daily and feed them and clean them out but obviously time was always off the essence cos i wanted to spend as much time as possible with my grandad so the pigeons were a bit wary of me. Its much better now I'm around a bit more but the pigeons still wont let me stroke them. Well One Eye does but thats only cos she's too old to get away lol! Blackie will let me go right up to him but I dont wanna scare them too much. They've been through alot of change already. I spend as much time with them as I possibly can but it so difficult when I am between my grandads house and mine and also work away for half of the time. Drop Wing does not appear to be losing weight but definitely eats alot less than Blackie and only seem to eat when I'm around.

Hi all Long time no speak I know. I've had a really busy time of it recently and then I went and topped it off by getting involved in a really bad car accident so I've been off work and on crutches for a while. Off them now, just gotta sort out my shoulder which still hurts quite a bit. THe one good thing to come out of it is that I have got to spend alot more time with the pigeons. The new shed is up now and we are just in the process of making the traps/boxes ( never know the right terminology lol!!) One thing I've noticed is that Drop Wing only seems to want to eat when I'm actually here. I never really noticed before as I was always rushing from my grandads to either my house or work. Does anybody else have this problem? I dont know if he is intimidated by the damn cats all around here. I have tried lion pellets but that didn't really do much and I have the biggest water pistol in the world whihc I squirt em with but Drop Wing definitely only seems to eat when I'm out with him. Blackie seems to be a bit better. Am hoping now we have the new shed up we can get all 4 birds back together. Only time will tell.... Have a great weekend everyone xx Oh yeah will post piccies of lovely Chicken Legs and One Eye next time xx

Well thank you all so much for all your support I feel better now. Not really knowing much about pigeons before the beginning of this year its been a big learning curve. I still haven't put the new shed up as I'm still not sure where to put it. I know it supposed to be 5 meters away but there is only 2 of them and I love having em close to me. The pesky cats really intimidate them and as I'm not here sometimes I hate the thought of some bully cat sitting on the roof with the poor pigeons inside crapping themselves. I'm waiting on some lion pellets that I've ordered off ebay to see if they work and i'm gonna put up some rubber spikes. There are so many cats around here its hard but the sonic jobby is not really an option as upstairs have a cat so it wouldnt be fair. Next time im at my mums ill get some piccys of my other 2. Chicken legs is well funny he just has such long legs for a pigeon!!!! :K)
-
Ah thanks hun. I'd never want to do anything that's cruel to them but I'd really hate to lose em. They're lovely. If it weren't for my job I'd definitely have some more but its not fair on my mum who has to come over every day I'm away xx
-
Oh my god!! The longer I spend wiv these pigeons the more I love em. I'm getting to know their personalities now. Drop Wing is very laid back and placid and Blackie is more stand offish but likes to know I'm nearby, its so sweet. Old One Eye and Chicken Legs are at my mums now cos Blackie kept picking on them and wouldnt let them eat but they are both getting on really well. The other day though I had a friend round and he said it was cruel cos I dont let em out any more. The thing is my grandad made the decision a couple of years before he died not to let em out any more as they were so old (they're all about eighteen) Old One Eye can hardly stand bless her. Drop wing seems quite happy and lays down alot. Blackie is probably the youngest but still old in pigeon terms. I'm not being cruel am I? I'm obviously just following on what my grandad had already decided. They used to go out every day when they were younger. I just dont think they would survive long now if I let em out. One got out accidentally about a year and a half ago when my grandad was still alive and we never saw him again. My friend made me feel really bad

Thanks for all your advice. I'm actually from the uk and i didn't know about the planning regulations so I may have to rethink that but as there is only 2 birds i may be ok. I'm very honest with my neighbours about what i'm doing so i think if they had objections they would say so. I have actually bought a cat repeller but i live in a masionette and the people above me have a cat which actually does not come into my garden but I think this may cause him some discomfort which I would never want. I've spoken to my neighbours and am gonna try albass oil to start which they have suggested then maybe some lion pellets but I still wanted them near to me as Drop Wing seems so much better by being up this end of the garden. I'm just a little concerned about how hot it may get inside the shed with the sun on it for most of the day. What kind of ventilation do I need. Obviously I'll have the little sticky out bits where the windows thould be (which i'm sure have a proper pigeon house name but damned if I know it!) but it still seems quite stuffy in there. Any ideas on how to combat this? Veeery tired now. Just back from New York and not slept yet so its off to bed for me. Have tucked in my pidgies and kissed em good nite!!!! :K)

Hi guys Am very excited as my new shed has arrived today for my pigeons. Just wondered if anyone has any adivce for me. I want to put it up near to my back door so I can scare away the many cats that are round here. They dont tend to come up to the front of the house. The shed near me at the moment which Drop Wing is in get the sun on it but can get very hot. The one at the bottom of the garden which has Blackie in it gets hardly any sun and the cats pester him down there. Thanks guys xx :K)

Congratulations to you all. My friends baby arrived yesterday too. She's an absolute doll - Jessie Ellie xx

My grandads old pigeons!!!
globalgirl replied to globalgirl's topic in Novices, Beginners & Young Fanciers
Hi Phil Thanks for your reply. Am still quite worried about them. Drop wing just either lays on the floor or on his perch and doesn't seem that active. Blackie hasa lost alot of weight and Chicken Legs has def lost his sparkle. I just dont know what to do for the best. Is it normal for them to lay down alot. Do they need mates? Am I gonna upset them if I move them again? Can you recommend a good web site anybody so I can try to learn a bit more about them. I just want them all to be comfortable and happy xx :'( -

Hi guys Well I'm having a right old time with my 4 pigeons!!!! :-/ At the moment I have Blackie in one shed, Drop Wing in another and Chicken Legs and One eye in another. They at last are all not fighting eachother but I'm worried about the two on their own being lonely. I tried to put Drop Wing back in with Blackie but he nearly killed him!!! Do you think it cruel having them on their own? When I cleaned out Blackie he was really freaked out which doesn't normally happen. Mind you there are so many cats around here whihc I keep chasing away but it must be quite scary. I'm gonna buy a new big shed for them and am hoping that I can partition off the shed and put old One Eye and Chicken Legs in one side and Blacie and Drop Wing in the other. Do you think if I put them into a new shed together Blackie might not be so terratorial?? Still haven't had the guts to clip em but my friend is gonna ask her friend who has pigeons to come an do it so fingers or claws crossed ;D :K) -

Hi Steve and Sam Thanks for your reply. I'll def try that but Blackie only seems to pick on chicken legs when he/she?!?!?! is trying to eat. It doesnt matter how many different pots of food i put in there Blackie just would not let Chicken legs eat. Which is why I separated them. I've been speaking to my mum and have decided to buy a much bigger shed to put at the bottom of the garden so they can all be together but I can fence off one side if they start fighting. They dont go out any more as they are so old and I'd like them to have more room. We now think that we might keep old one eye seperate as she is so very old and nervy as she only has the one eye (hence her name ;D) and even chicken legs that was being bullied himself is now dive bombing poor old one eye. Then she gets all jumpy and flies into the shed wall cos she cant see where she's going!! I never realised pigeons were such bullies!!! I had one eye on her own for a little while and she seemed quite happy by herself. I dont know how you guys cope with lots of pigeons I'm struggling to get 4 of em to get on with eachother. Think I'm a bit too soft!!!! -

I live in West Ewell Surrey. My dear old grandad didn't really have any pigeon friends left when he went. We have bought a new shed and put it up at my mums house as she is there all the time and it seems fairer but because blackie was bullying the others we left him where he is. I really thought we were gonna lose old one eye when they were all in the same shed but she seems to have picked up a bit now. I feel really guilty about blackie being on his own tho. It just doesn't seem fair. Shall I take the mini blackie back to be with him? Will he get lonely. I'm still adding a bit of conditgioning seed to his feed like I was advised to do but only a very small amount. Wish I knew more or rather had the time to learn. Just hope I'm doing the right thing by them. -

Hi guys I haven't been able to get on for a while. I've been busy renting out one of my rooms. Busy busy busy. I've has to separate big blackie from the rest of the pigeons but now i'm worried that it might not be fair leaving him by himself. Do pigeons need company?? Wish I had more time to find out more about them but trying to sort out 2 houses coupled with a full time flying job is tough. I've moved the other 3 into a new shed. Should I try to introduce blackie once the others have established themselves. Do you think it will stop him bullying the chicken legs and one eye if they were in the new shed first? -

What is happening!!! I'm turning into the pigeon lady of Surrey!!!! I was driving under a bridge in surbiton and I saw a bird sitting in the middle of the road. I know most people just expect them to fly away but somethin didnt seem quite rite so I stopped (much to the exasperation of the drivers behind me ;D) It was a baby pigeon who was trying to get to the side of the raod and trying to fly but not managing it. He got to the side but I couldnt just stop so I pulled in a bit further up and went back. I know your not supposed to move young birds so I just watched to see if his parents were about but when a dog went for him it got too much so i picked him up, still not sure what I was gonna do with him. He was so scared bless him and just a little baby but it was such a busy road with so many animals about. I needed somthing to put him in. I looked around and saw a kentucky so I went in holdin the baby pigeon and said "can I have a bargain bucket please" the guy behind the counter said "do you want breast chicken" i said "no thanks just the box!!!!" We have a wildlife rescue place near me so I took him there and they are gonna hand feed him as he is so young. I'm gonna check on it progress bless him. I bet my grandad is havin a good old chuckle about this -

Oh dear Chicken Legs seems to have all the feathers pecked away from the back of his neck. I've only noticed as he leans in to eat his food. Think the Big Blackie is pickin on him. Should I be worried or do they fight quite alot?
