I am getting hit nearly every time I have my young birds out by a sparrow hawk or goshawk. So is my mate 3 miles away. It is war now. Hate watching my old ones speed up and away after alarm call. Some are so frightened they fly for hours. Killed a few young birds as they are sitting ducks at times. Mjb

Alf I am no expert but have witnessed many die in their sleep. We believe we had it on our cruise at Christmas in the Far East. Was so congested I thought I might die. I kept sleeping to a few hours at a time. I got up cleared my chest each time blew my nose as I have never had so much snot. We do not know if we had it but we think we did.

Oliver's Journey, Charity Afternoon
South Kirkby Miners Welfare Club, Millers Walk, WF9 3DP, Saturday 14th March 1pm - 6pm
On Friday 7th January I received a call from a friend and fellow fancier Steve Foster of Barnsley. He informed me that a young couple who are close family friends had recently received news that no parent should ever have to hear, just days before his 4thBirthday their beautiful little boy Oliver, had been diagnosed with Neuroblastoma, a rare children’s cancer. Not only that, but following his initial diagnosis it was confirmed that the cancer was stage 4 and had spread to Oliver’s kidneys, skull and his eye socks. Poor little Oliver is now undergoing an intensive 70 day period of chemotherapy before being reassessed to see how successful the treatment has been. The course of treatment is predicted to take well over a year, most of which requires Oliver to spend prolong periods of time in hospital.
Oliver is a very poorly little boy and as I type this I have been informed that he has picked up an infection and is now in isolation in hospital, meaning he can’t even spend time playing with the other kids on the ward. However, despite all this Oliver remains very upbeat and never ceases to amaze mum Laura and dad James with his unwavering resilience, managing to somehow cope and to live as much of a normal life as possible whilst receiving such intensive treatment.
So after discussing little Oliver and his loving Mum, Dad and little Brother Alfie who are all suffering as a family along with Oliver it was decided to try and help in some way. It was agreed that we would organise an auction in order to raise funds to assist the whole family, not only with funds to help with all the financial difficulties that such a sad situation brings to a family unit but also to add to the money already raised towards treatment that Oliver may require in order to keep him on this earth with us. However, this treatment sadly isn’t available on the NHS, but is available in the US and will cost over £200,000. As a parent, I simply can’t process just how Laura and James must be feeling, every single day and night whilst their little boy endures life saving treatment. Sharing the time in hospital with Oliver whilst still working in between and caring for their youngest son Alfie. I know if I was in the same situation I would work my fingers to the bone 24 hours a day and sell the shirt off my back in an attempt to raise the money needed for the live saving treatment.
No parent should ever lose a child but this is the very harsh reality of the cruel disease that is Cancer, in its many forms. In my own family we lost my youngest brother suddenly and as you can imagine it crippled us as a family and to witness my Mum and Dad go though what they did, was truly heartbreaking in every sense of the word. Life can be very cruel and often to those who don’t deserve it, so lets help little Oliver and his family as much as we possibly can and do what us pigeon fanciers do best, get behind a good cause.
So with the above in mind Steve Foster, Adrian Millthorpe also a pigeon fancier and myself have put together an auction of approximately 50 specially selected 2020 young birds from the top lofts in South Yorkshire and other areas of the Country to put up for auction. We have also gathered a good amount of fantasic none pigeon related raffle and auction prizes in order to bring Oliver’s family and friends (none fanciers) together with the pigeon fancying fraternity, which can also only be good for us a sport when the event is published in the local press.
The event will be taking place at South Kirkby Miners Welfare Club, Millars Walk, South Kirkby, Pontefract, WF9 3DP on the afternoon of Saturday 14th March at 1pm till late. Please, please come along for a great afternoon of fund raising and entertainment.

I have some young birds in the stock loft ready to put in their own section,however I have three spare hens in that loft.
Will the young be OK with them or will the hens take a dislike to them ?
Should I move the hens into the race loft with the race birds,the racers have just hatched ?
In my own mind I would rather the hens went in to the race loft but don't want to upset the apple cart in there.
There's ample room in the race loft as it's basically in two sections with an adjoining door(Open while breeding,then closed for roundabout),nest boxes one side poles the other.

Yes no problem however just to make sure put a plank in the loft which is off the ground where the young birds can hide if they need to. Think this makes sense? Mjb

I have seen an old video who fed Natural Granen Diet Mix which I can see has either been renamed or discontinued. Has anyone got the new name or alternative for this mix?

The closet we got to knowing anyone else was our neighbours son in law s boss and her family were on the cruise even though we did not know them they lived the other end of Stoke. Funny old world. Mjb

Well I booked a holiday of a life time to the far east on a cruise and saw 4 fantastic countries Thailand Vietnam Singapore and Malaysia. I always wondered if I would see anyone I knew so far from home which is over 6000 miles. Imagine my surprise when I did. My ex wife!!! I was gob smacked to say the least. Have you any funny meetings? I yes please let this topic know so we can all have a chuckle. MJB

So how many cats and dogs fell yesterday because I bet the rescue centres will be inundated with the blitters.
No seriously it just rained and rained in Stoke on Trent after 10am. When I looked out the window this morning it was sunny but now it is raining again not as heavy as yesterday but raining nevertheless. MJB -

My old friend Eric Fox of Bakewell used to say that his best birds rarely ever bred anything good however he used to keep some of their children who would nearly always become good producers. If they are distance type birds try pairing to a faster type pigeon. MJB

The British pigeon racing season is at risk from a no deal Brexit, after the EU warned it would impose strict checks on birds crossing the Channel.
Every weekend from April to September, thousands of British pigeons travel in convoys of customised loft-lorries to liberation sites in France, the Netherlands, Belgium and Germany.
An estimated 16,000 individual birds travel to France alone during the season when weather conditions are safe for channel-crossing on the return flight to the home lofts, hundreds of miles away.
