Deep litter havent cleaned my yb loft in 2 years. Perches are 2x4 rails and they poop off the front or back and it hits the floor. Haven't scaped in about a year. I just turn the floor over once and a while (months between doing that). Last year was my best year for ybs yet.

I have a very hard time believing it is the weather. I live real close to canade and it is very cold and I also know people in northern canada that are breeding now. I think you made a mistake with the barley. You might do that in the fall for a week or 2 to get the weight off but why not have some fat on them for breeding. The fat will be gone after the first round anyway but that is the parents safety net, so to speek. You don't want them too thin for breeding. I would put a very high fat and 18 percent protein mix in there right now and get them some weight and they will start breeding.

This is from one of the clubs here in the states. Flordia accually, (gulf coast club) there are some of the best in the world there. You can race amost everyday of the week there and the races are a thousand plus birds all the time. They say if you can have a bird place in the top 50 there consistantly you are a champion. Here is a link to one of their sprint races with only 1388 bird entered. Check it out 300 birds clocked in 5 minutes now that tough compitetion! http://www.racingpigeonmall.com/cgi-bin/rac_data/racdata_rac.pl?fid=1235498715&query=all_search%3DGulfcoast%2BHoming%2BClub%26allany%3D%2Band%2B%26pagenum%3D3%26cgifunction%3DSearch&cgifunction=form

You only need the high magnification for checking blood. If you arre not going to do that then you are set. Remember alot of ads will say 10x, 40x, lens (objective). Well these are 100 and 400 power lenses because you have to multiply by the eyepiece lense (usually 10x).

Try it and we will see if any of you know what your talking about. ;D

Here in the states we call a bird like in "pigeon mans" avatar a silver. A mealy is like this also but with a red/brown collored head not the silver head. I know it is not right but I am talking about racing pigeons here you can call them whatever you want on the race sheet.

Pigeon is a strong red meat with a irony taste like liver. It is not bad and in some dishes pretty dang good. People do pay $22 dollars a pound for squab here in the states. I like to eat it in a stroganoff just substitute the pigeon meat for the beef. It is really good. I know people are thinking "I can't believe you eat your pigeons" well I believe you don't kill something for no reason so if you are going to cull some why not eat them?

When i clicked on it it started scanning my computer for viruses or something I closed off immediatly. I suspect this is either a virus or some type of spyware. I would not click on it.

For short races nothing and for long races peanuts.

Well, this is a great site but !!!! As someone posted earlier "come on USA everything is bigger there" well it is. The Pigeon-talk site has 13152 members. Sorry guys. -
Alright another guy from the states. Sounds like you got some nice birds there NW. I am sure most people know who Dean Pallet is.
-
Thanks for the advise guys. I will let you know how my birds hold up to my natural birds at the end of the year.

I have read it in alot of systems over the years that pull flights. One goes back to the 70's but the most recient system that uses that is the Alex Bieche system and it is simular to what I am doing here. People are having luck with it here. Oh, Alex may have won the Champion loft award for the whole US last year and if he did not he was very close I would have to check.

OB racing is not as popular here in the states. I only have time to do one and since more people race yb's and the fact you can't race ob's without racing yb's I choose to race yb's. I keep the very best at the end of the season for the stock loft, sell or give away some and cull the rest. I am not a person that thinks you should kill something for no reason so I eat the culls. They make a very good beef stroganoff just substitute the pigeon meat.

I am in the US. I only fly yb's (like alot of people here). These birds are only just over a month old and are molting like crazy. Someone told me if I didn't put the lights back on them after the longest day they would molt again? Do you think they will get through the molt? The flights also? Last year I flew natural and had problems with birds being on the 9 or 10 in the money races. Lots of people pull flights here especially in flordia cause alot of the systems don't work well there. Reason is it is too hot and humid. I have heard there are some there that pull 5 flights and tail feathers also.
-
Are you talking about later in the year? If so I would be close to racing season here. Also I never heard flights won't grow back to full lenght? What am I supposed to do about the molting of #8,#9,and #10 flights during racing then?
-
I think this is what it is called. Has anyone done this? I am breeding from 12 pair in my garage. They are on lights and heat. Lights on 20 hours a day. When I tranfer them to the yb loft outside they fall apart body moulting like crazy. I think I will have to do something about the flights so I am going to cut the first 3 after they drop one and pull them after 10 days. I will put the lights on in the yb loft after the longest day of the year here to hold the feathers through the race season here. What do you think sound about right?

Hawkeye software is great.

You can use a stain to check for yeast (I have never done this) I think it is called a gram negative stain but would have to look it up. You can also do cultures to detect yeast. I use stains to do blood smears only. This will check for stuff like malaria, hemaproduce (sp), and basically anything that could be blood born. I only check my breeders cause if it is eliminated from the breeding loft it won't be in your yb's. The microscope you posted looks like the specs ae good. I have never heard of the brand but I am from the states. I would think for a nice scope with those specs it should be a minimum of $800 dollars. I don't have anything real nice just an older olympus scope with 4 objectives 4x, 10x, 40x, 100x, and a 10x eyepiece. So with the eyepiece my scope goes from 40-1000 power. It has an electic light and nice adjustable table. That is about all you need. I would like the computer atachment alot but don't have it.
