I would agree with "ME". If their are no immediate problems get them through the moult first. Then get the droppings tested and treat accordingly. Also do not entertain strays at anytime. If you do need to house them stick them in a spare box and loose asap

Ive always been a big fan of barley. Mainly as a regulater and also fed up to 50% to keep the weight down after the moult. However after reading Chris Gordon's article after he won the Tarbes National at 700+ miles. He feeds 100% Barley through the moult right up the chipping of the egg. I havent the bottle to try this but it would seem that feeding Barley only certainly wont hurt!

Do you let your birds out at end of racing season
Mark Bulled replied to leighton1984's topic in Notice Board
Mine go out whenever I am there, which unfortunately is only weekends during the winter. -
1. Save some money to pay for next season 2. Socialise with non fanciers 3. Walk around without my head in the sky and feathers in my hair 4. Stop looking at every weather forecast 5. Stop looking at my watch 6. Do some work at work 7. Only see my pigeons in the dark (apart from weekends) 7. Play football on saturdays

Ive still 45 from 60 - All been every week Have 28 in Guernsey so all could change
-
I understand - thats a fair jump and to be honest Ive never sent a baby over 300 miles. The longest I ever had on the North was Berwick 290. Longest this year is Geurnsey 196, but half of that is water!!
-
Obviously regardless of the strain of laying and being driven, the form wont come back again properly until she's been sitting at least 4 days. If you do send them too soon they sometimes dont want to go back on their eggs anyway, suggesting that they werent in the right "frame of mind" when sent?
-
I was always taught not before 4 Meaning never send Hens until they have sat 4 days. However this time of year when the egg flow is high I would get her out for a fly thursday. If she looks fine then I would send her. Good Luck

Sorry to be ignorant. Why are members sending so few? Losses? Cost? Distance? (or am I just a mobber :
-
Think losses are generally down to bad fanciership. Well trained pigeons from good established stock are rarely lost unless hitting a particularly bad race/sent extreme distances. Why is it the same guys lose loads when other fanciers in the same race have 95% returns?

Thames North at Fareham 83 miles
-
Chrissy - I believe YOU are extremely naive if you believe you have to treat to win! xtccock - the opposite in fact, I have very few losses, why? I have a family with a strong consistution that home based on years of severe selection and not from a bottle.
-
I'm with you Iplates. Healthy pigeons shouldnt need propping up every 3 weeks, and all you are doing is damaging the immune systen of the pigeon for short tern gain
-
Sold Thank you

Agree with that Mick. The pigeons always seem to race keener when they home after lunch. I only like to see early libs in extreme weather conditions.
-
LOL Darran - No way you could have trained here - hardly been able to get them out all week. Its so dark they would need a minors lamp at mid day !!

Grey Cold Drizzly in Essex all week. Strong North winds. Due to break tomorrow :-/

With the uncertancy regarding Bird Flu I purchased some late breds in 2006 to boost my sprint pigeons. However on reflection my heart is no longer in sprint racing and I want to concentrate 100% on the distance. I therefore offer 2 matched pairs of 06 Staf Van Reets that I havent even tried. I bought these off B Sands & Son, Kent, who are very successful at sprint racing (7 x 1st Fed in 2006!!). The pigeons (full pedigrees) are bred from early original Mardon pigeons, and they are fine strong specimens. £30 each - £100 the four. View if required. Mark 07931 999745

You must decide what you want from the sport. To be successful with babies you must be on the dark and also have a good YB system. I personally think YB racing is more specialised than old birds (To be really successful). However you have to weigh up the pros and cons. Are darkness babies any good as old birds? and do your working hours fit in with the darkness system. I personally race the natural system, reletively unsuccessfully. However I race them all the time they are in good feather all through the card. They may not win much as young birds but I expect them to be cometitive from word go as yearlings.

Nice one Darran - where's mine
-
Youre right Darran - this pre booking lark is all new to me!!

£2.50 a bird Ouch indeed!! Think this winter weather in Essex has put mine into an enforced moult. They were fine on Friday when I sent my form off - but now there are feathers everywhere. No point sending them to Guernsey if they are not right though. I will put it down to experience!
