I agree I also think we clean too much , my loft floor is deep litter , nest boxes can be left as long as dry and free from red mites , if the loft is clinically clean the super bugs evolve so its finding a happy balance somewhere in between clean boxes fer me dry droppings on floor ybs i like them to be in as much droppings as possible to build up immunity within themselves , they say your only as clean as the dirtiest loft , but the birds in the dirtiest lofts are the ones less likely to ail from the race pannier imo

yup can get the beer mats but not the real creosote as changed the recipe , lice puncture holes in feather making lift / down force harder and weakening flights or snapping them , a wild feral bird wouldn't be hampered by red mites or lice as are not confined and there droppings would fall to bottom of cliff / tree , and would simply move there nest if had red mites , you wouldn't want your birds leaving home fer elsewhere Have heard the old adage of 5 bairns in a race having head lice which one won ??? the fastest of course but feathers are what enables flight the more damage to these the less likely to achieve the best possible performance

cleaning is more for our needs not the birds , but if you've ever had red mites then keeping clean is a must to stop them infesting your loft nesting time is when these spread so better to be proactive as birds don't rest in a loft with red mites

I prefer to clean too many parasites lurk around nest bowls I do spray bowls and cracks twice a week once they go to nest
