HoniesLofts Posted March 10, 2014 Report Posted March 10, 2014 I restarted with the birds last June, and have a well trained, but not raced team of 36, these have all been in a 10x6 two section loft, one i got last May, with the box aviary on the front and i have been very happy with it. Except for one thing, it doesn't have a corridor and i don't like the fact you have to go through one section to another and a few other points, had a corridor before. The current loft has 16 widowhood boxes in that i sectioned off to make 32 young bird boxes. So these can be very quickly turned back to the standard boxes. I haven't paired them up yet, they have been parted since before xmas I have a new loft coming next week same style, but this time with a corridor. a three section loft. I plan to race my 16 pairs and breed about 60 youngsters. So my question is this. Do i move the 16 pairs to the new loft and maybe have two widowhood sections and a section for the hens and put the first two rounds of youngster in the 10 x 6 loft, then the third round of youngster in the 3rd section and then put the hens in hen boxes ? or keep cocks in the 10x 6 and put all the youngsters in the new loft and the hens in one section. I am worried if the cocks will move to the new loft or want to keep going in to the old one. Would i be better to have the cocks in the new loft with the corridor so they are not so disturbed ? Any help or advise would be great
frankdooman Posted March 11, 2014 Report Posted March 11, 2014 The birds will move no problems I would move the old birds into the new loft with nest boxes and settle them for a week then let them out a bit sharp on the food keep the old loft closed then feed them back into the new loft the clever ones will be in no probs. don't give in to the odd strangler that won't play the game lock it out it will go in in the morning it's just the same every year when wee move the yearlings from there y/ bird loft
walterboswell59 Posted March 11, 2014 Report Posted March 11, 2014 id leave as is for this year with all yb in new loft whats the hurry plenty time for an easy move next season m8
paddymac Posted March 11, 2014 Report Posted March 11, 2014 I'd leave the birds and race them to the loft they are in and move them over to the new loft when racing has finished. Plenty of time during the end of season to settle them to the new one
HoniesLofts Posted March 12, 2014 Author Report Posted March 12, 2014 I was thinking maybe a good idea to keep em in the old loft, they already have the boxes etc, the current sections are 5ft wide and i had the boxes made to fit, so would be easier for now just to put some v perches up in the new loft and see how i go.
