I`m hoping to race young birds next year , i`m thinking of maybe four or five pair of stock birds to breed and race 15 to 20 young birds , i don`t want to have too many birds and would prefer to keep things on the small size , what do you you good people think, is what i`m proposing a bit on the tight side would say 30 youngsters be better, how many young bird races is there in a season and how many losses on average could i expect to have ??? , i just don`t want to over do it in my first year , i know some people have loads of young birds but i really want to have a small team , i`ll be flying from my back garden and i don`t think there will be any problem with neighbours , but i don`t want to p*** any body off if i can help it :)

Welcome to basics mate!

I don't think there's a right and wrong answer to how many young birds you can have, except don't overstock your loft! My team this year is only 12 strong. The smaller the team, the easier it is to monitor them health wise, but in a bad season you might end up with only a handful of yearlings for next year. It depends what your future plans are.

I did it the same way as you and bought stock birds in to breed my own young. I wouldn't do it again. I would buy my young birds from a top racer in my area and go easily with them. If they do well, breed off them next year as yearlings. If they don't, buy again but from someone different.

Ask 20 different people you'll get 20 different answers! You've got to take a chance and decide what suits you best.

Best of luck

Lee

Hey northern monkey this is my first season with the racing pigeons and I have been bread 35 youngsters and right now i am left with only 26. But three of the ones I lost actually died so from training and around the loft iv lost 6 before the racing has even started. And there are 9 young bird races in my club plus the young bird national. I know I'm not very experienced with racing anyway hope that helped all the best of luck Craig.

Cheers lads ..........great info thanks , Lee... i did think about buying in for first year, it does make sense at least then you will know a bit about the birds you are breeding off the next season and you could build a decent line that way, Craig... losing six from training doesn`t seem to bad mate how many birds are you going to send to each race and what do you expect out of your first year ?? i think i would just be happy competing the first year and anything else would be a bonus and don`t plan on sending more than a couple of birds to each race and now i know that there is say 10 races in a YB season i think 20 - 25 birds is enough for me 15 probably a bit on the low side and i do like the idea of buying in :)

Cheers andy.

Nopeoblem Andy:)and I know losing 6 isn't to bad but guess I'd prefer if they were still in the loft but I guess it's true what people say "you can let them out but you can't bring them back" and I don't plan on throwing all of them into the first race incase it turns out a smash up so what I will do is what ever I have left for the racing starting half the team will go to the first Brechin and the second Perth and the other half will get the second Brechin and the first Perth. I hope to have 20 for the racing starting and if I have 10 to 15 by the end I'll be happy.

Thanks Craig

You don't have to go to all the young bird races watch out for the ones that show some

Promise and don't be afraid to stop them.as yearlings put them out to 200 to 250 miles

Then again stop the ones that show promise ,then they can go anywhere if they are bred

For the job.good luck to u both.
