AlphaAl Posted March 19, 2013 Report Posted March 19, 2013 Hi lads, I'm looking for some advice or tips on what you all do or would do. Iv been keeping & showning fancy pigeons for a few years & iv never dosed or treated any YBs until a week or 2 before a show for canker, trico, etc & the pmv vaccine. But any new birds iv ever bought I have quarantined them for about a month & treated them for every thing before the ever got near my other birds. Now I'm only starting out with racers & I have just weaned 5 chicks & put them in YB loft,i don't want to treat them for anything till about 2 weeks before the race season or as soon as I get pmv vaccine, cause I'm a believer in letting their imune system build up. So my question is iv just got 5 more chicks off someone, I'll keep them in a cage for 2 days just to see how their getting on, But should I worm them at least or what would you advice me to do, sorry about the long write up, but its just something iv never done before & I know I can't quarantine Ybs for to long cause they'll get to strong & will miss out on getting use to the loft regime & stuff, so any help would be great, cheersAl
Guest geordiejen Posted March 19, 2013 Report Posted March 19, 2013 you are quite right to let the birds get there immine system going and i wouldnt worm them only canker when weaning.however you should get them jabbed for pmv before they are let out to fly and its a must if they are to be raced.you should not be racing pigeons which havent been jabbed.your local club will give you advice on this.
AlphaAl Posted March 19, 2013 Author Report Posted March 19, 2013 Yeah Ill defo give them the pmv jabb, not sure what's going on here with it the vaccine I'm waiting for the club to come back too me with some info. What would your advice be on adding the new additions to the YB loft ?

gulkie Posted March 19, 2013 Report Posted March 19, 2013 I must disagree with the comments made I would worm the young birds and jab them As soon as pos and get them to-gether I believe young birds carry worms and cankerFrom the nest JMO.
scottym7 Posted March 19, 2013 Report Posted March 19, 2013 if i bring any new bird in i worm cocci & canker them always as gives me piece of mind
AlphaAl Posted March 19, 2013 Author Report Posted March 19, 2013 if i bring any new bird in i worm cocci & canker them always as gives me piece of mind And how do you do it ?, as in I use the liquid or powder form, cause that's what I have their, but each one has to be dosed over a few days, so it takes more then a week to treat, so they might be a bit strong & flighty by the time I put then with the rest, would you think ?
Guest geordiejen Posted March 19, 2013 Report Posted March 19, 2013 i think all pmv vaccines its a 2 week period, this is so the vaccine has time to work on the pigeons immune system.

Harkers 3 in 1 tablets, they make life quick and easy
AlphaAl Posted March 19, 2013 Author Report Posted March 19, 2013 Harkers 3 in 1 tablets, they make life quick and easy Brilliant mate, I'll look into getting some of that, just to have, sounds like it would take alot of the hassel out of it, cheers
AlphaAl Posted March 20, 2013 Author Report Posted March 20, 2013 Ok iv ordered the harkers 3 in 1, & have decided to just give the new birds the tabs for now just to be safe & will do my own birds just before the trainning with other birds starts.
AlphaAl Posted March 22, 2013 Author Report Posted March 22, 2013 Ok I got the harkers tabs, gave my 11ybs one, & while I was giving the 5 new ybs I noticed under the top beak of one had yellow gunk ( canker maybe ) so iv isolated him, should I put the other 4 which could not see anything in mouth or throat in the yb loft now or what do you lads think ? How long do the tabs take to kick in, cheersAl
dwh Posted March 22, 2013 Report Posted March 22, 2013 personally i would use a treatment specific canker treatment isolate the 5 new and treat all a lot of these 3 in 1 are of a lower dosage
