I race my young cocks back to hens and they have a matter of minutes with the hens and then they are parted. This happens at every race and training toss.

As yearlings I never show hens or pair them up at all. The cocks are celibate and race to the box all season. So to answer your question, I definately think you can overdo the motivation.

The benefits of my way is that I win races and I don't lose many pigeons. The down side of my way is that the hens are left doing nothing which means that I always have a suplus of lovely hens. Another down side can be that in spite of the fact that I have some very good cocks I do not take a youngster from them while they are in the race team.

The main reason that I adopted this system was to reduce the time and effort that goes into the birds because I don't want pigeons to take over everything else in my life.

My yearlings see their hens for around 30 minutes before being basketed, the basket is then put in a spare section for around 45 minutes to allow the cocks to calm down.

I'm more concerned about weather conditions than anything else, they're kept at home if there's east in the wind or a strong tail wind forecast.

Its not a bad idea to send them to the first race sitting for around 6-8 days then widow them when they get home.
