hi everyone im a wee bit confused on the use of light to hold or bring on the moult.if i wanted to bring the birds into the moult earlier than the birds natural cycle what would i do?is there any aspects of breeding times in the year that will change the timing of the moult.

Its often regarded that when adult pigeons sit their 2nd round of eggs (after rearing thier 1st nest) for around 10 days they will drop their 1st flight. This is the beginning of the moult. The earlier you pair them up in the year theoretically they'll finish the moult earlier than those say paired a month later.

i know you racing ones have different reasons for breeding early for the racing programme.so if the birds are first paired in january the second round will be early march would i be right?

Hi Geordie

I mentioned last year that i do not have my show birds sitting on eggs or young after 1st June and they are always through the moult for the show season, i take it this is why you are asking the question?

the main thing is pair up early and split early.

scotty i stopped the breeding early this year but there was a long moult.seems the birds threw there down feathers early enough but the flights are still to throw.last year was the same a long slow moult.trying to find out the best management for breeding and moulting for the early shows.i dont have the answers but you do lol gary coffeys birds were top order today.obviously i couldnt take them out the pens for further inspection but they seemed right through the moult.
