bobo Posted July 12, 2012 Report Posted July 12, 2012 Got a youngster here that's got runny droppings and is really thin but is still eating and extremely lively,it just doesn't seem to put weight on. Any ideas?
Guest geordiejen Posted July 12, 2012 Report Posted July 12, 2012 could be a number of things, taking a stab in the dark could be the worst thing to do.i would try some probiotics but if its eating well and wattery droppings it sounds like worms but then again if its in with others they would also be coming down with it.
Guest Owen Posted July 12, 2012 Report Posted July 12, 2012 Electrolytes for runny droppings to stop it becoming dehydrated and make sure that they don't run out of water, and that's important. Without seeing the bird it is difficut to tell what is wrong but I would get a droppings test done to get a correct diagnosis. If you don't want to do that do the following two things. Vaccinate the bird with a water based vaccine even if it has been done previously and treat for worms. The best worm treatment is Moxidectine or Cidectine and after the treatment leave the birds rest for about a week or ten days and do them again because if as I suspect they have hair worm one treament will not shift it. One treatment will eliminate round worm but not hair worm. Make sure your birds have fresh grit and clay blocks every day without fail.

Guest Owen Posted July 13, 2012 Report Posted July 13, 2012 buster151water based vaccines are much easier to inject and therefore you are less likely to make mistakes when you vaccinate the birds. I also believe that the vaccine is much easier to be taken up by the bird's body which will be better for the bird. Finally I have tried many experiments over the years and I have found that the water based vaccines definitely are better help the bird's immune system. I have come to believe that pigeons suffer with Paramixo in a variety of ways and many of the health problems we get are caused by Paramixo in one of it's forms. What we call YBS is often a form of Paramixo and a a further injection will often work wonders. The Vets advise us to vaccinate the birds at 4 weeks of age and I always do just that but there is a problem with it. In some birds there will be a partial degree of immunity and consequently the vaccination may not work as it should. The result can be a sick youngster when it is put under pressure later with training. The second vaccination will help to stop this happening and the bird will benefit from a better level of immunity. Try it and you will probably be pleasantly surprised.

Very sound advice, I would not hesitate vaccinating for paramyxio twice any more, best thing I've ever done.
