I was reading a post earlier about someone that had their birds killed, and their was a photo of a dog in the thread which was good for protecting birds!  Try this one it is an african mastif (boerboel) and keeps just about everything away from the loft.  i had one in South Africa and even i was nervous going to the loft.  No honestly probably the best Guard dog around and brilliant with its owner and family.  God help anyone/thing that doesnt belong there though

They were used to keep lions off the farms years ago.  a whole chicken a day usually keeps them happy

rhodejan ridge backs pretty good as well   and wouldnt need so much feeding

There are a two breeders in the UK, i am on a waiting list for one, they are a bit pricy though,  want to see some more, google "Boerboel"  plenty of info about them

never knew there were such dogs in the uk i like the french mastives they use to use for boar hunting

You can have your fancy breeds but for me the German Shepherd and the Malinoise are still the breeds of choice for the professionals. Trained right and they will do the job right.

everyone 2 there own the 2 south african breeds were bred 2 be fearless and as a general rule they are and very mutch a 1 man dog .....

agree with you Owen, German Shepherd is a great choice, nothing fancy about these though, just good honest South African breed and great family pet, although they do eat some

i think the boerboel is from the molosser family of mastiff type dogs...

you are right that they were bred to be fearless Gangster but the Boerboel also makes a magnificent family pet.  www.claymoreboerboel.com is one of the breeders over here, have a read up on them, although they are fearless and excellent guard dogs, they are also excellent with people and not on the dangerous dogs register.  most South African's grow up with them and swear by them
