As some of you know I have only recently started up with pigeons again. Last year I was badly affected by YBS, after the second race and a lot of my youngsters had to be put down, those that recovered look well and flew well after a fair rest, I have trained them and they have come well from all the training points. As for racing this year my losses have been large and the ones that came through have done reasonably well. I have been told that I am wasting my time with them as the YBS has weakened them and they will not amount to much when they face a harsh race. Do you think this is correct am I wasting my time with these birds and should I concentrate on my new young birds?

I vaccinate exactly one month before the first race this season however it has changed.

Regarding birds doing well I topped the fed one week before they got young bird sickness, they were then treated for 3 days and plenty of rest missed one weeks racing then went the next to take the first Three in the federation. All our winning birds the last 12 years When we first had it,have had young bird sickness. We however use a product when notice the first signs, called Xerex it has to be given for Three days in 24 hours you notice a difference. We will only feed pellets at this time as any that are sick will not be able to pick the mush up.

best treatment i found is dont feed till crop is empty or wait 24hrs to feed

1 charcoal tablet down the throat only feed half ounce of corn max for 3 days with half a charcoal tab each day they should be bright as rain in few days only feed a very light corn e.g barley for 4 or 5 days you can bring it up to 3 quaters of a by the 5th day

they will be be grand in 5 or 6 days

some people induce sickness to empty the crop ive never found the need usually not feeding for 24 hrs does the trick

where do you get Xerex from and what pellets do you use

Xerex is a product to Bilco recipe, I usually get mine of him or at Blackpool I think it's dazers stand but sure bill could tell you more. But it's the best thing I've ever came across for young bird sickness. I personally use g10 pellets. However first signs no food for 24 hours.
