1) Eggs too tough reason too much barley

2) Not enough nutrients in egg ( b12 is good to ensure nutrients are rich )

3) chilled causing death

4) paratyphoid

5) red mite

Just a few probable reasons

Hi Sasha, I've had a couple like that. I put mine down to young hens that keep coming off the nest and the temperatures that we have just had at crucial times when they are just hatching. The other night was minus 12.

Inbreeding can also cause it - young not being strong enough to break out of the egg :)

their can be a number of things, when you say they dont hatch out when they are dead in the shell have they pecked a hole on the egg.if this happens then the inside of the egg dries out and the bird cant turn to make a crack all the way round.this happens say half dozen times in one breeding season.if this is not the case then the bird migh be too weak to hatch.this unfortunately could mean the youngster has had salmonella passed onto the egg from the parents before hatching.
