Guest newcomer Posted January 31, 2012 Report Posted January 31, 2012 I have recently bought in two stock birds, a matched pair, I Have noticed that the hen when in the aviary stands on the bar perch and flaps her wings as if she is shaking. The wings do not fully open and she does this as if she is stretching them at the but end to the body. She fly’s the length of the flight and back and around the inside of the loft without any problems. She has been treated for worms, lice, coxi, and all the usual when she was put into quarantine for a couple of weeks. She has had a calcium treatment, and is now on cod liver oil. Her dropping are firm and in good condition and the feathering is tight, her wattle is snow white. Her throat is clear of any problems and she looks in good condition in all ways. She does not take much notice of her cock but follows him around the loft. It is this wing half/quarter flapping, almost in slow motion, there appears to be nothing wrong with the wings themselves, has any one got any ideas.
THE FIFER Posted January 31, 2012 Report Posted January 31, 2012 if its a stock bird prisoner, could be just exercising,if its shaking this is good condition, provided there are no other problems,
yeboah Posted January 31, 2012 Report Posted January 31, 2012 Looks as if the hen is just not settled into her new surroundings and longs for home be patient and give here time to settle, its your choice but pure water would be a good choice ,a doctor does not give us all those treatments when we move house atb mick .
OLDYELLOW Posted February 1, 2012 Report Posted February 1, 2012 Some good answers there , it's not unusual for prisoner birds to exercise there wings in the manner you have described , also takes time for birds to get used to there new surroundings , also just because it's a matched pair doesn't mean they've actually been paired either so they could be technically newly introduced

I think you might be right, it seems that she shows signs that she has been confined in a very small area for a while, every thing seems to be right with her, just this problem. I hope it clears, just wondered if it could be any thing else, something I should worry about.
just ask me Posted February 7, 2012 Report Posted February 7, 2012 think all is ok mate often see mine when there in top form grabbing the pole in the aviary with there feet and flapping like mad they do it a lot after a feed
