the very things that you see physically are all well and good , pigeons that win come in all different shapes and sizes , most will agree good feather , balance in hand the bigger the pigeon the more harder to condition it unless you basket train . The very thing you can't see is will it perform when raced then that's where Mr Basket comes in he's the best and fairest evaluation of a birds worth and tells no lies or gives excuses :) Many times I've read culls were in a basket someone pulled one out bred big winners , even De Klack had a hen he thought worthless performed poor paired with a cock , let have eggs by mistake hatched and bred winners de45 i think it was ( number could be wrong but gist of story there ) probably the best De Klack producer that was destined for the bin .

excellent reply old yellow, when racing the basket never lies and your gist of it proves a point that even the best flyers make mistakes when it comes to breeding ive tried and more often than not failed in matching birds to size, eyesign, family and even bloody pot luck!i read articles have asked top flyers there theory to pairing inbreeding linebreeding even been to a few top lofts and was ask which pigeons do i like would i pair etc proper put me on the spot ive never managed it and so now i cheat i dont look at the pedigree which is only as honest as the bloke who wrote it what i look for is pigeons that are bred to fly big futurity races or gold ring races and card in said races a few years back i went to ernie williams entire clearance sale as he had a pigeon that took my eye old reliable whose children were peppered through the sale all carded many 1sts etc i duly took a son off his son young reliable home parents gran parents etc all bred to race in a big local futurity race a few weeks later a&i doughtys sale took home a daugther of the warrier and parents aunts uncles scored well and funnily enough one was 2nd in same race as cock birds parent was 7th the big vanroebys race it was. i like everyone to believe that was my plan but to be honest buddy i didnt clock it till the youngster off said pigeon a year later scored 2nd club 2nd fed 2nd club 14th fed a year later he scored 1st fed by 15mins another second and 9th fed thats when it dawned on me tried it out again for a friend twice different birds all bred to race big races or parents bred birds to score well in said race 4 pigeons all scored and scored well i spent 30 yrs trying to pick them off the perch so to speak and im a failure but as old yellow said the basket even in other peoples hands picked winners for me and birds that bred winners and boy was that pigeon ugly long legged thin he looked like a stork as a baby tell you what he became so bloody handsome when he topped the fed my he was a bonnie lad if anyone can do it id love to meet them really would
