Any ideas to sort it, apart from the bin ? Suck it out with a syringe and needle, the biggest needle you can get. You'll need to do it for a few days though. Much quicker to make a small hole with a very sharp scalpel then squeeze the air out. It will keep filling up again for a few days but less each time. its supposed to fill it with air do they not, thats what pouters dooo I nearly gave the same answer Archie!

hawked again Posted August 24, 2011 Report Posted August 24, 2011 seems to be between the ist and second crop lining as it will not escape via the mouth as normal So cut just a wee hole deep enough for the air to come out but you will have to do it two or three days on the trot.
xtccock Posted August 24, 2011 Report Posted August 24, 2011 keep the bird isolated do as others say very small nick with stanley blade clean one,at front of crop cut gently till you see air bubbles then squeeze gently it either has a respiratory infection or has banged itself (balloon crop) give baytril for seven days or broad spectrum antibiotic you will probably have to squeeze the air out a couple of times may be a day later.. i had this happen to a racing cock cut him squeezed n when he went back to his box and spun he filled up again so had to isolate keep him calm no calling etc, that advice was from kev winter.
Guest IB Posted August 25, 2011 Report Posted August 25, 2011 It's probably a ruptured air sac. As you guessed, the air is not in the crop, it's trapped under the bird's skin. I've never had it but this is the advice vet Frank Harper gives on his video:- "Use a hollow needle (type used to vaccinate pigeons) to free the trapped air by puncturing the 'balloon' at it's highest point - it'll come out under its own pressure. Alternatively just leave the bird for a few weeks and it'll come right by itself."
Guest Doade Posted August 25, 2011 Report Posted August 25, 2011 I lanced its outer crop and it went down instantly. Just need to keep and eye on it. Thanks lads
Guest geordiejen Posted August 27, 2011 Report Posted August 27, 2011 doade thats ballon throat.i never seen it before and got 2 birds last year with it.both youngins.what i did was put a sterilized straw through the crop for a few days.whats happening is the valve or whatever you call it has swollen and doesnt allow air back out of the crop.the pressure needs to be taken away by means of air to be released through a straw or something.the valve will heal itself with the pressure off it.hold the bird under a light and make a small hole at the top end of the cropavout an inch away from its beak.holding it under the light make a hole where their isnt any vein then their will be no bleeding.clean it every day and remove it after 3 days this should clear it up.
