Hello everyone. This is my first year racing and after the heavy losses incurred in the first two races I was left with 6 birds. In fairness I only began with 20. Anyways, I decided to get some latebreds and train them up for OB racing next year. They are doing fine and started to bunch up the last few days. But one of the youngest ones (who still has to take to the skies) has been mad for food the last week. As soon as he sees me he's flapping like a little squeaker looking for food. I gave him and some other young ones all the protein mixture he wants. Anyways, heres my worry. This evening I opened up the loft to let them exercise and they were'nt interested. But they were all mad for food even some of my oldest ones which are 6 months old. I have never seen anything like it. Also, in the frenzy some walk out of the loft into the shed (my loft is within a larger shed). They ate loads. About twice what they normally would.

Droppings look ok. Only saw one green one. They were recently treated for cocci and canker.

Any help? Cheers . . .

this could be one or 2 things the first one could be, they have worms and what ever you gave them was not strong enough, the second could be you, over feeding the birds and the feeding you use you have changed, when the birds get the feeling there crop ain't full as some of the new mix is taking to long to germinate, but when it does swell later on they seem to then think thats the norm and as a result as there belly's are swollen they think about more grub all the time. you will need to add loads of barley for a few week to reduce there belly's

There seems to be quite a bit of this knocking around. What it is, what causes it & what cures it I haven't a clue.

Thanks for the response. I will monitor the situation. I haven't wormed the new birds and the last time I wormed the older ones was before racing so I think a worm tablet wouldn't go a stray. Cheers...
