Guest Freebird Posted February 23, 2010 Report Posted February 23, 2010 Our wee Westie has been daignosed with enlarged heart and a lung condition and will be on medication till she gives up the ghost. I know there are a lot of dog enthusiasts out there and I'm looking for advice on how to get these meds easier and cheaper. We have just spent a fortune at the vets and now after a couple of months he wants her in for another check up before he will give us any more meds and I think it is a rip off as the dog is on it's way out but he says it is required legally. Any advice will be greatly appreciated. She is still getting out for her walks (try stopping her) but the time will come when we will have to call it a day and get the jag. The chest thing is weird as you can hear her breathing in and it sounds like crunching dry leaves in your hand. They say there is nothing we can do but give her this antibiotic and heart pill for the rest of her days. Sorry to go on a bit but I just thought there may be someone who has come accross this before and just might have some tips for us. Cheers.
just ask me Posted February 23, 2010 Report Posted February 23, 2010 maybe the name of the medications may be easier for people to help

Guest stb- Posted February 23, 2010 Report Posted February 23, 2010 my daughters whippet has got cushings disease , and the vet is charging her £50 a week for its tablets and about £150 for test every 3 months , think that is a ripp off maself. DOGS ONLY 4 so could be an exspensive thing to keep for another 12 or more years :o

gorsy bank lofts Posted February 23, 2010 Report Posted February 23, 2010 you are not obliged to buy the medication from the vet that diognoses problem and some will give you a prescription to buy on line a lot cheaper, they will charge you for this service. check with your vet if he wont ,do a search for vets that will, pets at home do this service. im afraid most vets have you by the b**ls on these things and take advantage. atb lyndon
tomkirby1 Posted February 23, 2010 Report Posted February 23, 2010 i am 75 years old can not remember not having a dog my dogs all live to be 15 to 17 years old as pupps they get all there jabs they are wormed and nevered wormed again now days feed is dry once aday on sunday no food never been to a vets only to have them put sleep of old age vets have a licence to print money
abbeypap Posted February 23, 2010 Report Posted February 23, 2010 Check the price of your required meds online from a reputable chemist. You can save money getting a prescription form your vet who will charge for writing it. Don't be tempted to give your dog medicines sold for human or other livestock use, they are not all the same. http://www.VetScriptions.co.uk http://www.petmeds.co.uk/ Most medications used long term do require regular check ups on your dog. The vet does have to check for any changes needed in the dosage being given and that the meds are not causing any sideffects. It's never easy when they get ill and near their lifes end and it is never easy to have them put to sleep, but it is your decision and not the vets when the time is right, your vet can only advise and some of the younger/newer vets don't like facing or making that decison for you. Hope your wee terrier continues to enjoy her walks for a while yet.
