Guest yorkshire terrier 77 Posted July 8, 2011 Report Posted July 8, 2011 i have just finished erecting a used loft that previusly had racing pigeons housed in it and the fancier used a deep litter system and i will not be , i have scrapped and brushed all the muck off etc and i am ready to give it a good cleaning with some form of dissenfectant so to kill any bugs or beasties , i know that the fancier was very good at keeping on top of anything like this but it had been stood for a few years without any birds in it. i would like to know what are the best things to use for this so to make sure i have nothing servive in there that is bad. also i want to paint the inside of the loft white so do i do this first or after i clean it all with products????
OLDYELLOW Posted July 8, 2011 Report Posted July 8, 2011 Jeyes fluid is a great loft disinfectant If been stood for a few years the risk from picking anything up is greatly reduced how ever I'd disinfect will get rid of all the dust and bloom and give it a fresh start and piece of mind Jeyes Fluid kills the Bird Flu H5N1 virus dead http://www.jeyes.co.uk/jeyesfluidJF.htm
greenlands Posted July 8, 2011 Report Posted July 8, 2011 I personally don't think Jeyes is as good as it used to be,i'm not saying it doesn't do the job.JMOI would use Virkon S.http://www.google.co.uk/search?q=virkon+sachets&hl=en&prmd=ivns&source=univ&tbm=shop&tbo=u&sa=X&ei=t-IWTr6wFouxhAfe05zMBQ&ved=0CDsQrQQ&biw=1259&bih=847 Lindsay
Tony C Posted July 8, 2011 Report Posted July 8, 2011 I would be inclined to lay a new floor over the existing one. Both Jeyes & Virkon S will do the job. If you go with Jeyes I've found using a paintbrush to apply best.

gordi.b Posted July 8, 2011 Report Posted July 8, 2011 give it a good burn with a blowlamp before u disinfect it and get it into all the corners then disinfect it
Guest yorkshire terrier 77 Posted July 9, 2011 Report Posted July 9, 2011 funny you should say lay a new floor over the old one as thats excactly what i intended to do but for a different reason as its tongue and groove which i hate as a floor covering scrapping just catches it and rips it up!! so was guna put some 4mm ply down so its easier to clean so i guess it would sort both problems out !! nice one. oh and if i have any gas left in my gas burner i will do that aswel but i been using it to get old paint outa the tricky bits of the loft i couldant sand lol not much gas left tho .hoping its a dry day today later on so i can get on with some more of it as its no good in the wet crappy weather we been having. it just carrys muck evrywhere. am just praying when i go in loft later its bone dry as i did what old yellow told me to and i think it may have worked . fingers crossed. then its just to paint and fit traps and new window inserts as i go along and the internals of course. at the mo i have some plastic v perches until i get my box perches made then the hens can have the plastic ones. well when i get some pigeons that is of course ha ha ha .cnt wait to get some pics up ..
Guest yorkshire terrier 77 Posted July 9, 2011 Report Posted July 9, 2011 forgot to say , do i do all of this b4 i pain tinside and do i have to dissinfect it again after i have painted ?? i know its a lot of questions and probly sounds daft but i just want to get the job done right. and i want the birds to be in the best home i can give them and have it right for them.
Tony C Posted July 9, 2011 Report Posted July 9, 2011 If its bare wood you intend painting.......... leave it bare! it allows the wood to breath = less condensation.
big blue bar Posted July 9, 2011 Report Posted July 9, 2011 paint it after all the disinffecting has been done . the white paint keeps it nice and bright for the winter dull days
Guest yorkshire terrier 77 Posted July 9, 2011 Report Posted July 9, 2011 now i see both ya points less condensation is goooood but it is dull in winter , my problem is its been painted on some parts and not on others as i have used different sections of an larger loft. i will dissenfect it first then think about it lol. thanks lads
big blue bar Posted July 9, 2011 Report Posted July 9, 2011 only use emulsion and it still lets it breath
