glenrandal Posted March 6, 2011 Report Posted March 6, 2011 yea seen it many times the hen sparrowhawk is very active at this time of the year before she goes to nest...............
Guest bluemorning Posted March 7, 2011 Report Posted March 7, 2011 can a cock sparrowhawk take a pigeon mid air and carry it off or is that just the hen sparrowhawk? kev its very rare for a male to take a pigeon but some may be able to.the female needs hieght or suprise to get close enough to strike.a female spar only weighs ounces and cant carry a full size pigeon they may be able to carry a half eaten one they killed the day before.they will also come back to a kill to feed again.if you see a bird of prey catch a pigeon and fly away with it its a percy.
Guest bluemorning Posted March 7, 2011 Report Posted March 7, 2011 hawk back today, got some help off crows they mobbed it and drove it off, lets hope the crows roost insmall wooded area where my loft is. did rhe spar attack as soon as you let your birds out, from the wood spend a couple of mins throwing sticks clapping hands etc change the time you let your birds out, because see will soon learn what time to visit you.good luck mate
kev01293 Posted March 8, 2011 Report Posted March 8, 2011 the reason i asked about s/hawks carrying pigeons off mid air is cos somebody about a mile away from me has tipplers and hes had a few taken mid air but then tipplers are smaller so maybe it is a hen s/hawk fattening herself up? i hope so cos the last thing i need is percy around my area, percy has been breeding in brighton (20 miles south of me) for a few years now so i suppose they will get up to my area sooner or later as their youngsters carve out new territories for themselves kev
