DOVEScot Posted May 28, 2008 Report Posted May 28, 2008 I have been looking at different ways to race birds, if at all possible, for Billy McKechnie, one of the ways suggested was the rabbit hutch system. Anyone used or have more links to this system would be appreciated http://www.pigeon-lung.co.uk/articlefiles/art_keithmott.html

Guest Vic Posted May 28, 2008 Report Posted May 28, 2008 This "beehive" system was used in the early sixties very successfully indeed by a guy, they called the "wizard from Heckmondwike" West Yorks. Personally I think the "bee hive" system sounds a wee bit better, than the "Rabbit Hutch" system, Don't you think? But my ancestors were Dane and not Celts. lol. I (ashamedly) have forgotten the pigeonmans name, proving that the marbles, have lost a lot of their shininess. lol.

I was told this afternoon that Jack Duckworth off Coronation St is the most famous for promoting this system ;D ;D ;D Beehive will do for me as long as it works for Billy
p charlton Posted May 28, 2008 Report Posted May 28, 2008 when i get a move!!! i am going to race from a avirey with deep boxes. i dont know wether to have a roof on the avirey. i think the rabbit hutch is hard work plus keath mott as a loft as well so he most of found it hard work. it must be a pain getting them to trap thats my view anyway

I like the idea of maybe an aviary covering a bank of hutches, that way you could trap or time into only one part of the aviary
just ask me Posted May 28, 2008 Report Posted May 28, 2008 id imagine traping is the problem but coulent see why u coulent fly widdow hood out of hutches
DOVEScot Posted May 28, 2008 Author Report Posted May 28, 2008 id imagine traping is the problem but coulent see why u coulent fly widdow hood out of hutches It would be really easy to fly widowhood, I think the aviary might be the answer
Guest Vic Posted May 28, 2008 Report Posted May 28, 2008 when i get a move!!! i am going to race from a avirey with deep boxes. i dont know wether to have a roof on the avirey. i think the rabbit hutch is hard work plus keath mott as a loft as well so he most of found it hard work. it must be a pain getting them to trap thats my view anyway NO! You have the wrong end ot fhe stick! Control is the least of your worries, as each Widowhood pair occupy a complete, isolated loft. I'm only sorry I didn't give it a go, all them years ago! 20 say! beehives would be ample, All paired birds in total isolation, so no doubt of parentage. No tranmission of sickness, as with a communal loft. Excersising? those that need it get it.Does away with the sheepish habits of pigeons. THIS GUYS BEE HIVES WERE VERY, VERY. IMMACULATE, WITH GLOSSY WHITE WEATHER BOARDS OVERLAPPING. THEY WERE ABOUT A YARD WIDE WITH 50% NOT VISIBLE TO THE ELEMENTS. BRILLIANT SET UP INDDED. MAYBE IF VIC WASN'T SO LONG IN THE TOOTH , I'D START SELING THEM. bUT IT WOULD RUIN THE ETS SYSTEM DON'T YOU THINK? lol
Guest Vic Posted May 28, 2008 Report Posted May 28, 2008 MAY I ALSO ADD THAT, WITH SOME OF TODAYS PRESENT DAY PRICES, FOR LOFTS, EVEN W.HOOD NEST BOXES, IT WOULD PUT MANY OUT OF BUSINESS. IF YOU HAVE THE SPACE, GIVE IT A GO! A BEGINNER MAYBE, COULD START PERHAPS, WITH FOUR OR FIVE MINI LOFTS, AND HAVE COMPLETE CONTROL IN EACH, UNLIKE PITCHING ALL AND SUNDRY INTO THE OK CORAL. NEST BOXES, NOT LOFTS IS THE SOLUTION! SORRY IF IV'E STEPPED ON THE PETRON LOFT SCENERIO, BUT ETS? PROBLEMATIC INDEED! LOL
DOVEScot Posted May 28, 2008 Author Report Posted May 28, 2008 MAYBE IF VIC WASN'T SO LONG IN THE TOOTH , I'D START SELING THEM. bUT IT WOULD RUIN THE ETS SYSTEM DON'T YOU THINK? lol Being a lot younger i may start making them, con fine them in an aviary and problem solved regards trapping, although the rule that the ets must be in your loft may be questioned
ozbrit Posted May 28, 2008 Report Posted May 28, 2008 Being a lot younger i may start making them, con fine them in an aviary and problem solved regards trapping, although the rule that the ets must be in your loft may be questioned i would ve thought if the ets is within the confines of the aviary it'd be ok
DOVEScot Posted May 28, 2008 Author Report Posted May 28, 2008 i would ve thought if the ets is within the confines of the aviary it'd be ok I hope so because that is what I plan to do with mine if I go down the ETS road, but I can fly to the lofts if not
p charlton Posted May 28, 2008 Report Posted May 28, 2008 one good thing about the rabbit hutch plan is the birds dont fly about in side. any set up needs to set up so the birds work about as much as pos insted of flying the werst dust is the dust that comes of the bird when they are flying and taking of
Guest Vic Posted May 28, 2008 Report Posted May 28, 2008 No aviarys whatsoever! You are defeating the system. Just plain "beehive" looking boxes, on Pedestals, or even screwed to a solid fence on the sunside part of your garden. Surely you Jocks, can read English, but some read Gaelic, I guess. lol. Cheers, Vic.
Back garden fancier Posted May 28, 2008 Report Posted May 28, 2008 I remember a system from years ago where a chap had widowhood boxes on his house wall, no loft at all. He just covered the fronts if the rain was blowing in. Not sure what system he flew? Maybe natural with each pair and their young all in together?

Sorry Vic I really have a problem with reading English, but being a Jock and known the world over for being inventors and trail blazers we can adapt even the simple beehive to accomodate pigeons and ETS ;D ;D ;D
Guest Vic Posted May 28, 2008 Report Posted May 28, 2008 PRESENTATION WAS THIS MANS SRENGTH, EVERYTHING SO IMMACULATE, SURELY THERE IS SOMEBODY ON PIGEON BASICS, WHO CAN GIVE US THE IMAGES FROM THE "GAZETTES" OF THE PAST.
