sapper756 Posted November 9, 2010 Report Posted November 9, 2010 anyone mix there own corn mix cos i.m thinking of mixing my own mix not me m8http://forum.pigeonbasics.org/public/style_emoticons/default/wink.gif I,m too lazy to try and work out the correct mix, I believe in leaving it to the corn companies to do it, however, I wish I had the time and the necessary know how, to do my own mixeshttp://forum.pigeonbasics.org/public/style_emoticons/default/wink.gif
JohnQuinn Posted November 9, 2010 Report Posted November 9, 2010 I mix everything the birds eat, i usually put 3 separate mixes together, breeding/sport extra/economy in equal amounts. I also mix grits and minerals pink&black together, with various small seeds mixed through it and hormoform, roughly mixed at, 40% grit, 10% minerals, 10% hormoform, 10% peanuts, 10% sunflower hearts and 20% small seeds.I recommend this mixture to anyone, your doos will be running after you and will spread their wings like hungry squeakers when you put a handful of it down for them, they shine like new pennies too
Guest bakes Posted November 9, 2010 Report Posted November 9, 2010 somethink i be trying myself this year as i no alot of farmers and so on and after talking to them all said there sort myself out with good few bags as thanks for what i am doing for them sorting out the problems with vermin on there lands as well as helping out come harvest time. so i be mixing my own coming year as works out alot cheaper mixing my own to myself buying bags of versel laga from corn shop. all best.
steve d Posted November 9, 2010 Report Posted November 9, 2010 I always purchased Versele Laga but like everyone got sick to the back teeth of increasing costs so decided to put my trust in a local corn supplier who I believe grows most of his own stuff, I have been using his moulting mix (£8 a bag) and have added to it a little black rape and if I am honest the birds look as well as they have ever done, my darkness birds have 1's and 2's to go and what I have noticed is that the birds are not as heavy as they were in previous years, maybe it is because of the higher barley content (about 15%).......I suppose I will know if I have made the correct decision when the old bird season arrives however looking at them they look really well :-)................I worked for a corn supplier for 4 years mixing corns and you would be suprised how many top flyers purchased their grains separate and asked me to mix them for them in the mixer, a well known corn supplier from abroad produce a leaflet with a percentage breakdown of each grain in their mixes, u can purchase the grains separately and mix the corn for around £3 a bag cheaper, or if your local corn supplier has its own mixing machine ( we have one around the midlands ) I am sure they will mix your requirements , providing you have a few bags, I was told 10 bags when I asked, it was still a couple of quid cheaper that way and also your mix will contain the same contents in all 10 bags.

steve d Posted November 9, 2010 Report Posted November 9, 2010 I used a well known brand of widowhood corn m8, i broke the percentage down and brought the main grains (maize, peas, wheat, dari, milo, safflower, tares etc) in 25kg bags and mixed my own its a lot cheaper with the added advantage is that because u are choosing your own grains you can get the best available............if a few are interested Klaus get a price of the others as well as Cosworth, I know BJF feeds mix their own and I am sure they will give you and your clubmates a quote, I am sure there are plenty others out there too maybe other members know of them ?

Guest IB Posted November 9, 2010 Report Posted November 9, 2010 Started mixing my own this time last year. Mixes are expensive, more so if the birds decide they don't like some of the grains in them, and that was what annoyed me most, paying through the nose only to have birds turn up their noses at it. I buy straights now, just feed each in different proportions depending on what the birds are doing.
