Guest youngboy Posted October 25, 2010 Report Posted October 25, 2010 next year i want to have if possible a full team of really taimed youngbirds?but everytime i try to do this theres always the few shy and an odd wild yb, but theres always 2 or 3 reallt taim flying onto my arm when i give a treat? can anyone give me advice/tips on how to really taim them or what to feed.
OLDYELLOW Posted October 25, 2010 Report Posted October 25, 2010 stroke the ybs and play with them on nest and feed by hand , also give peanuts as a treat however i do believe some wont be as tame as others the more you sit with them the more used to you they'll be
Wiley Posted October 25, 2010 Report Posted October 25, 2010 the best way to tame ybs is to always have treats on you ever time they see you, or you could do what i saw on one dvd many years ago have a manikin in the loft lol
Guest joshdonlan Posted October 25, 2010 Report Posted October 25, 2010 when you wean them feed them on a small table, too high for them to get to and lift each bird onto the feed table
tommyc Posted October 25, 2010 Report Posted October 25, 2010 i go into the loft after feeding . i started with just putting my hand close to young bird to get it used to me over the week i have moved closer and getting them to fight with me pecking hand etc . nothink worse that a mad young bird tends to get them all jumping out of box now all birds fine and easy to handle if needed just my way of doing it. think if you start giveing treats they wnt do it without them always expecting a treat thanks oldyellow and wiley
Rooster J. Cogburn Posted October 25, 2010 Report Posted October 25, 2010 If you can feed them at sort of waist level this is a good way to get them used to you.If you have a titbit they start taking it from your hand in no time.Another thing is when they are at the perching age go in just as its getting dark and play with them when they are on the perches. They'll be reluctant to leave the perch due to the darkness setting in so they'll let you touch them etc. so they gets used to your hands.after a couple of nights of this they begin to peck you and fight back. Long and short of it though the more time you spend with them the friendlier they'll be Theres always one or two that are a bit timid compared to the rest but as long as they are not afraid of you theres nothing to worry about.
blaz Posted October 25, 2010 Report Posted October 25, 2010 most of my birds old and young are very tame but not all .their is always a small few that don,t want to know and stay a bit nervous regardless of treats.you are on the right track as you have said some of them trust you enough to land on you.keep it up you will get their in the end.you will proberly find the same as me you can get about 90% tame.i have had 1 or 2 very flighty and nervous win races 1 in particular winning yb open newark a few years back.have knowen fanciers to take nervious flighty birds out their team i myself would not . best of luck and keep doing what you are doing.
Wiley Posted October 25, 2010 Report Posted October 25, 2010 should also mention never go into the loft at all filled with aggression, if you do dont go to handle any birds, as you do you will be rough with them mark my words. Especially if a pigeon evades you, you will only try and grab it harder and rougher the next time you try and grab it. Take your time!!
yeboah Posted October 25, 2010 Report Posted October 25, 2010 I have a full length corridor with four bay windows the youngsters get to rest in the sun and fresh air during the day when they come of the darkness ,they are also feed at this level which is approx chest level (well mine) they become very tame but should never be caught and handled as this is there space ,i have a sliding corridor door with a flap that the training basket sits against ,i am then able to put my arm around the youngsters and cox them onto the floor and into the basket ,if i wished to handle a youngster for some reason this would be done when they were perched the others never move i think with not being overhandled jmo .
Guest bakes Posted October 25, 2010 Report Posted October 25, 2010 all my birds are tame come to me or misses when were scrapping out sit on our backs or shoulders we put time in with all of them little treats like small amount of red band each bird out of hand or a few peanuts everyday me personly think it helps in the motivation if there tame as there not just raceing back to there cock or hen but to me as well some might laugh but you have to see it to beleave it got a few hens when i go in the loft there all over me soon as i open section door they fly to my shoulder after a treat and when there out i only got to say come on and they will fly off loft to my hand or shoulder and flirt about i dont like wild birds in loft like an relaxed loft that goes with the flow but thats just me. all the best.
