CHAIRDE   FRIENDS

hi all i still have a couple of pair ( fantails ) on chicks but once they are finnished i'm going to make some changes to the loft at present i have the nestboxes at floor level on the left handside of the loft 2 high great for jack looking in to see whats going on but i now realise NOT SO GOOD FOR ME with a broken spine so the nest boxes are coming out and going onto the back wall (i'll post the pics when i get it done)

now to the floor grills

our loft is only 8x4 i scrape it about 5 or 6 times a day (not really needed just to give me something to do) but i have seen floor grills in loft photos do you think it worth while ( its only a small loft)

if you install grills how do you work with them

once the dropping drop threw do you put dusting power down on top ??

how often do you lift them to clean out

and this may sound stupid

but how do the birds cope on the grills (would they be suitable for the fantails)

GO RAIBH MAITH AGAT MO CHAIRE

THANK YOU MY FRIENDS mick

with the loft you have i wouldn't bother with them.

If i was to build a new loft though it would def have floor grilles but there would be at least an 18" gap under them with vents around.

This allows air flow right from below floor level, and food dropped etc falls through and then they can just be lifted every week or so for cleaning.

The best loft i've seen and a 7ft gap under the grilles with a seperate entrance door where a guy could just walk in under the loft and remove the droppings.

I have had grilles in all my breeding lofts at one time, but i found that some of the older cocks had trouble treading so i removed them,i just keep them in the aviarys :) but i have been to may top fanciers that use them in there race lofts and very pleased with them.

Its much more easer to spot loose or discoloured droppings on a solid floor, rather than grills So any disease can be spotted a lot quicker and treatment can used instant . Instead of waiting for infection to spread unoticed

Each to his own I suppose, but a lot of sense to your comment on droppings.
