This morning finally saw me getting around to splitting up all my pairs, and cleaning out all the nest boxes, I keep the cocks in their sections but close off the nest boxes, thus allowing them to perch on the outside of their box. All the hens now go into the young bird loft, which has access to a large aviary. The young cocks are now introduced to their new environment, whether it be the widowhood section or the natural section. This is also the time where I take some time to have a good look at the stock pairs and decide what stays and what goes.

Have you split your pairs up yet?

My racing finished earlier this year, so my pairs have been split for quite a few weeks now. Other than remove nest bowls and give boxes a good clean, cocks still have run of their boxes as that is where they are fed & watered, all year round.
