Guest ROCKYandRAMBO Posted August 25, 2009 Report Posted August 25, 2009 12x 6 i have two 8x6 sections and will be keeping 8 cocks in each section
PIGEON_MAN Posted August 25, 2009 Report Posted August 25, 2009 hi all wot wud u say wud b the best size section 2 put 15 widowhood cocks in Would say it all depends on what size your going to have your boxes and how your going to set them out,3 sets of 5 which would probably be two tall but less width or you could put 5 sets of 3 which would be a lot wider, then again you could have 4 sets of 4 making 1spare or have 16 cocks.

Guest ROCKYandRAMBO Posted August 25, 2009 Report Posted August 25, 2009 yes mate they will be fine in my imo
Guest Owen Posted August 25, 2009 Report Posted August 25, 2009 I go with Rocky and Rambo. If you have two sections of 6X6 you can have 8 boxes in each. With widowhood cocks, less is more. I have 16 boxes but only fly 12 birds. 6 are two year old and up, and the other 6 are yearlings. I also work the bull system from the widowhood sections. I put a grill between the pair and I then mate the hen with a Bull. The widower rears the young as his own and I have better youngsters. At the end of the year I will always remove the older cocks to keep them at 6, and obviously I bring the best young cocks in to maintain the 6 yearling numbers. On small point. Make sure you think carefully about the ventilation. It will make or break your performances.
Guest ROCKYandRAMBO Posted August 25, 2009 Report Posted August 25, 2009 hey thats a gd idea owen never thought about mateing a bull cock with the widowhood hens . have to make sure you have top class widoowhood hens then

mark croker Posted August 25, 2009 Report Posted August 25, 2009 yea mate you will, I have 16 in a 8x6, my boxes are standared widowhood boxes with 1 row off each front cut off( I think they are about 23 inch) and the same depth as normal, you have to have them same depth (14 1/4) or they dont work,
Guest Owen Posted August 25, 2009 Report Posted August 25, 2009 Rocky and Rambo if you fly total widowhood, like me, you will give your young bird hens every race. And some will win. Then because you will end up with a surplus of hens you will pick the best. Some say that widowhood is a waste of good hens. It is not, because you will end up with a tremendous team of breeding hens. All proven and all selected by performance. And don't forget, that a lot of them will be related to your good cocks. I have found that my system is making the pigeons better year on year. Another benefit is, the fact that some pairs do not work together as breeding couples. But, because you will pair your Bull Cocks to, say, 6 hens each, they will soon show you which couples actually work. And when you write out the pedigrees, it is really nice to write down all the prizewinners that will be in all your youngsters. My birds are not all good but they all, without exception, have a winning parent or parents.
pjc Posted August 26, 2009 Report Posted August 26, 2009 Most std widowhood boxes are 30" wide and the max would normaly be 4 high so in an 8x6 you would only get 12 boxes.
Guest southern and mason Posted August 26, 2009 Report Posted August 26, 2009 myn r up and over boxes 22" wide so 4 high 4 across wud get u 16
