JohnQuinn Posted September 10, 2010 Report Posted September 10, 2010 what do you think would be maximum i can house in the 5ft by 8ft secion? You'll be fine with 40 in a section that size, so long as there are twice as many perches as pigeons!!
Guest IB Posted September 10, 2010 Report Posted September 10, 2010 IMO you need to consider what use you will make of the section. If its a breeding section with say 16 boxes remember that you might start off with 32 birds in it, but at the height of breeding season that could go up to 48 or more, depending how many pairs you breed off. So not only do you need to design ventilation to cope with those peaks, you need somewhere for the OBs to chill-out when they are not sitting, e.g. an aviary.
Guest Owen Posted September 11, 2010 Report Posted September 11, 2010 It is not possible to put a figure on by just looking at the dimentions you have given. As IB says, a lot depends on the use you are going to put to the section. If it is widowhood, for example, I would have about 8/10 birds in that space. Then again, a lot would depend on which way the loft is facing and the degree of ventilation you have in it. Your pigeons must have adequate air(ventilation) and plenty of sunshine to be fit and healthy. Then there are the bathing facilities. These days you can not risk letting the birds bath outside because they would be vulnerable to attack by hawks and possibly even cats. If that happens you can kiss goodbye to any race form for quite a while. If you are serious about wanting to win pigeon races, you must get all these small things right because if you do not, you will be in for a lot of disappointments. The things that wins pigeon races are good birds, first and formost, and the care and attention you pay to keeping them healthy by correct feeding and suitable accomadation. If you get all this right the birds will do their job, but if you are greedy and overcrowd, they will not be able to win races for you.
Guest youngboy Posted September 15, 2010 Report Posted September 15, 2010 sorry on late reply but ill be using it for the old bird race team ( hopefully around 10-14 boxes depending on how many i have left throught the winter as i have 22 for racing next year. 10 of these are laterbreds and 9 are gifted to me to race for me.and i will be building a small avairy on wheels as i have a walk way on front of the whole loft which is about 3 and a half foot wide and the avairy will be able to go on any section i want to leave birds all there bit sunlight. thanks very much for your replys owen and IByes owen i understand thats all im afraid of is overcorwding my loft as when i first started i learned hard way of havin X amount of pigeons in such a small space and were to hard to manage and atm i have 22 for racing and 26 also we are upgrading the roof so then we can get better ventilation.
