Guest maiden heaven Posted September 9, 2010 Report Posted September 9, 2010 Recently, and even well before, I've gave beginners a leg up in the fancy of Budgerigars. Not wanted anything in return. The point I want to make is when someone gets something gave to them free, and as much as its then loosely speaking their birds, when the person decides they dont want them, its good manners to to contact the original contributor to ask do they want them back.Only today, I heard of some of my birds being given to someone else.Birds bred off top bloodlines.Granted, not pigeons, but the same to me, should apply.I just hope that anyone being helped by others with Freebies, do appreciate the gesture.Sometimes, and again my opinion, a price or small donation to charity would be a little way to show appreciation.Believe me, Its only from my own experience, granted, by a small minority that has lead me to this opinion.
micko and jack Posted September 10, 2010 Report Posted September 10, 2010 agree 100% when we started up I was looking indian fantails for jack and couldn't get them anywhere I had seen photos of them on the net reading up on keeping fantails and thought they looked lovely (and they are) I joined this site put a post up and was on the site nightly but wasn't posting as people were talking about racing and we had fantails after a week of no replies I put up looking back on it now and after experiencing the generously of fancies on this site a very cheeky post saying I was looking indian fantails no one has replied I'm not asking for them for nothing ill pay for them gangster replied saying he would see what he could do and mick didn't know me from adam mick GIFTED jack 3 pair now mick had to get them from somewhere as he has racers and in all honesty probably out of pocket jack was 18 month at the time we had garden fantails jack arrived at our house in the mornings we went out let the birds out jack would sit with a pot of corn fantails all around him and him lifting birds after getting a feed the garden fantails went on the roof the indians couldn't make the landing board jack was lifting them all the time and I was giving out at him as much as I wanted him to enjoy his birds I had to think of the birds welfare also so I rang mick and told him the craic he replied there jacks birds you do what you like wwith them I gifted the 3 pair to a very nice man who I asked for fantails when we just started bought jack and myself into his lofts pick what you want I picked I think 4 pair and there was none of you cant have that one or anything like that it was pick what you want after we hampered the birds I asked how much I owed him his reply as long as your grandson enjoys and take care of them that's enough I went to the super market brought a bottle of drink chocs and flowers for his wife and went straight back to noels house and that man has become a friend we ring eachother maybe once a month sorry for going on very sore tonight cant sleep and no one to talk to simply the descent thing to do I agree 100%
Guest paulrstokes Posted September 10, 2010 Report Posted September 10, 2010 I have helped out two lots of new starters in the past, but I will be vary wary in the future. on the first occasion I gave a guy 4 pairs of my race birds so he could breed himself a couple of rounds of youngsters, I told him I may want them back depending how my season went. As soon as he had finished breeding he lets them out, they arrive at mine where the trap is open enter the loft and carnage breaks out, I had three pairs on 8 day eggs in preperation for a 400 mile race, smashed eggs scalped hens etc. Then last year I sold a cock bird, the lad that turned up said he was a new starter etc, so I was generous and he walked away with three pairs. The cock bird he bought had been bought by me 2 years earlier from a sale in the west midlands, then totally out of the blue the guy I originally bought him off reports a bird to me via the rpra, I realised it was the cock I had sold onto the new starter. Then the other birds I had given start to turn up one by one.So same as before had enough and just let them out.
blaz Posted September 10, 2010 Report Posted September 10, 2010 i have helped out a few lads with birds north and south of the border not had a problem with any of them .so i would not put any one of doing this.
Guest maiden heaven Posted September 10, 2010 Report Posted September 10, 2010 i have helped out a few lads with birds north and south of the border not had a problem with any of them .so i would not put any one of doing this. To be honest, this is a generous way to help people get up and running with decent enough stock.Of course, this is purely for the individuals choice.I've done it for so long, but do believe that its a different case when you buy a number of birds from a particular breeder, and a bird is added as a present. That has been done when I spend at a particular stud.(Budgerigars).Same principle!!!!Not everyone is straight when getting birds, but everyone has'nt a hidden agenda either,I was that angry with the birds I gave free to be given to someone else that would'nt spend a penny on stock, and if I had my way, also would'nt have had them. Its not playing the game. If? you gave birds to help someone, and rather than ask you did you want them back, you hear in the Grapevine, someone else had them, whether bought or free, you'd feel a bit agrieved, thats the point being made.
Guest Owen Posted September 10, 2010 Report Posted September 10, 2010 Years ago I was very successful at breeding Canaries. I though I was being nice and generous by giving birds to new starters and novices. I soon learned the error of my ways because they abused the birds and did not value what they had. Not in every case but too many to make me want to carry on doing it. This was at a time when canaries were quite valuable and easy to sell for good prices.I have given pigeons away to people who won Nationals with them and plenty have won Club races and Fed positions. Again I have had to wise up because the people who won the big races never asked me if I would like a youngster back. Worse still one guy had birds that were doing really well for him and threw them away by sending them week after week until they were lost. He even sent a bird that had won really well right up the Fed level after it had hit a wire. The stupid greedy sod.The birds that I breed these days are really very good, as those who know about them will tell you, no-one but no-one locally will get them anymore. I think I have learned my lesson. I can only sell a small number each year so I will only let them go to people I know will look after them and get the best out of them. I have come to realise that the old saying is totally right."Give a beggar a good horse and he will ride it to death". Some know when they are well off, while others will ruin anything they touch. Sorry about the the strong views but you have touched a nerve.
geordie1234 Posted September 10, 2010 Report Posted September 10, 2010 I have been given everything starting this year some very good birds of top fanciers aswell 24 birds were given to me in total for not one penny and baskets sputniks drinkers even pmv jab. Without all this generosity i would not probaly got as far as finishing my loft. If for whatever reason i had to chuck it (never think it will happen) i would have the decency to phone every single person who has helped me start up and let them know im chucking it and at least offer there birds or equipment back just out of common courtesy and hopefully one day i will be able to help someone because if people arent helping younger people into the sport sadly i think the cost of equipment will probaly too much to even think of building a loft

micko and jack Posted September 13, 2010 Report Posted September 13, 2010 this thread is all doom and gloom and that is not the case with everyone please dont think that if just one person is desent then that a good thing many many people have helped jack and me after our i think our 2nd breakin members from this site offered jack all kinds of birds from club winners to fed and channel racers I have said it before the generosity of fancier on this site is humbling and i suppose thats what makes it special so dont let some put you of i know its hard trying to judge people but we ALL need a helping hand at times

Basically, I think we can bring this chapter to a close.
airdrie2 Posted September 14, 2010 Report Posted September 14, 2010 NOT ALL DOOM OR GLOOM IF IT WASNT FOR A FEW GUYS WHO I DIDNT KNOW BEFOREHAND I WOULDNT HAVE THE HOBBY THAT I LOVE AND WOULDNT BE ABLE TO COMPETE WITH THE SO CALLED MONEY MEN THE GUYES WHO GAVE ME MY START AND THEY KNOW WHO THEY ARE I AM MOST INDETED TO THEM AND THEY COULD HAVE ANYTHING OUT OFF MY LOFT NOW OR IN FUTURE SO NOT ALL BAD
