lawrie Posted October 28, 2009 Report Posted October 28, 2009 hi, not been on here for ages. i have came up with an idea and wanted advice. i want to put a box for 1 pair of horsemen on my roof. my idea is to suspend the box from the attic window. i need advice on how big the box should be and how i would access the box without moving it. i have basic ideas but input would be nice. i thought open hole front, make the roof of the box hinged so as i can clean and feed the birds. its maybe a totally bad idea, and if so please be honest.
OLDYELLOW Posted October 28, 2009 Report Posted October 28, 2009 i think your wanting something similar to the belgium koyte men , im sure something be on net somewhere
fletch Posted October 28, 2009 Report Posted October 28, 2009 all i would ask is why you doing it for
THE FIFER Posted October 28, 2009 Report Posted October 28, 2009 yes could be done , you could have the box fixed inside the attic window with an entrance through the window, would have to be able to close the window for weather ,
lawrie Posted October 28, 2009 Author Report Posted October 28, 2009 the reason being is all the lofts around my area are being broken into including mine 4 times! so i gave my stock away as i dont race birds. not sure why people do it but i had all my whites killed. so thinking of a window box for the birds safety and it requires no outside loft.
Guest frank dooman Posted October 28, 2009 Report Posted October 28, 2009 ive seen this many times the box inside the loft was about 3ft long with a small sec at each end to place a cock or hen in, the middle sec was where the bird been flown goes out and in with the hood attached some could go up and down with hooks

Lawrie I thought you were on the bottom flat ;D ;D ;D Valliant is the one to speak to he done something similar years ago when he kept horseman, you ain't had much luck with your birds so I hope you get sorted this time
lawrie Posted October 30, 2009 Author Report Posted October 30, 2009 i moved from that flat last year, got a new flat that has an attic. theres a few guys round about that have proper roof huts....if you want to call it that. im not into having anythin that big. just a box to fly them from...keep the birds inside the attic in pens.
Guest IB Posted October 30, 2009 Report Posted October 30, 2009 I didn't think you would be allowed to keep birds in the attic. Planning laws lay down 5 metres from the house? Also, if its a tenement property, roofspace may not belong to you / be part of your flat.
lawrie Posted October 30, 2009 Author Report Posted October 30, 2009 its a bought flat, the attic is mine, has anyone got pics of some roof boxes?

MsPigeon Posted October 31, 2009 Report Posted October 31, 2009 I've never heard pigeons called horsemen before... is that European??? But I get the drift of your question Lawrie. I once gave a pair of pigeons to a friend who wanted to keep them in her hay loft at the barn. We built a 3x3 or so, tall enough to walk in with a door around the window opening. It was great, very easy to clean when you can walk into it. It had a nest box at about eye level and a small landing board outside the window. Best of Luck Carol

MsPigeon Posted October 31, 2009 Report Posted October 31, 2009 Oh yes, I've seen Pouters at the fair. Very nice photo chickadee. Do you let them out to fly? I keep Frillbacks to show at fair, but I never let them out. I'm not sure they could fly higher than a perch. Thanks Carol
