Guest skippersworld Posted August 3, 2010 Report Posted August 3, 2010 Hello, im new to this forum and a total novice with pigeons!i would like to know if there is a way to tell what sex pigens are?&& also would like to know if there is things to put in a pigeon loft to entertain the birds? Thanks!
Rooster J. Cogburn Posted August 3, 2010 Report Posted August 3, 2010 Used to see sex detectors advertised in the pigeon magazines etc.never bought any so can't say how good they are or that Its quite tricky with youngsters to tell sometimes.a lot of people look at the shape of the head, size etc.you get some where its fairly obvious but a lot of families of pigeons have henny looking cocks or BIG hens so its no easy Once you start breeding you own birds its a bit easier.you can begin to tell by the colours of the babies.I try to work it out from their feet when they are at ringing age(5-7days) and it works fairly well.If you line up all 3 toes and the outside 2 are the same lenghth I've found they are usually hens if not they are cocks(could be talking complete rubbish with this but I've found it to be quite useful )It'd be interesting to see if any of the more experienced members have any tips on this? As for entertainment i have "Radio 2 doos" .they get the radio on sometimes-its mainly as a cat deterant though but i think its keeps them calm as well

In general, cocks are usually larger and show off more than hens. They will puff thier chests up making plenty noise and fan out their tails whilst 'dancing' to impress the hens or cocks for that matter. Like everything else in life you get exceptions to the rule.
gulkie Posted August 4, 2010 Report Posted August 4, 2010 don't buy any of these sex detectors ,there a rip of, all you needis a needle and a piece of thread does the same job[not saying itworks either]but it's cheaper, once you get some experience you will find it a bit easer ,had them for 25year still get some wrong, good luck and welcome. wullie g
PATTY BHOY Posted August 4, 2010 Report Posted August 4, 2010 Yes, definately the bowing and cooing can be a big give away of a male, plus the hip bones. Also a good tip I got previously was to place the pigeon in question alone with a mirror, if they bow and coo at the mirror they are male, if not they are female, again this is not 100% certainty but will give you a good indication. It is quite difficult sometimes to tell, but following the above should help you have a rough idea
Guest skippersworld Posted August 4, 2010 Report Posted August 4, 2010 Thanks guys, will give these a go and see what happens, also anything to entertain them? or just leave them to entertain themselfs?

When they are pairing its a good idea to give nesting materials-straw,tobacco sticks and the like.you'll find some of them spend a lot of time nest building. Not really sure of ways to "entertain" them as such.If your introducing birds to a new loft they'll fight amongst each other for the best perches etc.If you watch them carefully they are always up to something

I always give it a bit of a sprinkle with anti fungal powder as well, just to make sure they don't get any illness from the stalks. As for sexing the birds it does get a lot easier when you start to develop a more homogonous loft. Because all my pigeons look similar it's very easy for me to tell the males from the females just by looking at their head shapes and hip sizes. That mirror tips a good idea, I'm going to try that!
