DJ Posted July 31, 2010 Report Posted July 31, 2010 early one morning last week i found a dead yearling on my loft floor that seemed fine the day b4 ? being a novice i didnt have any idea what could have caused my birds death so assumed rightly or wrongly that it had suffered some type of major organ failure as it seemed to be in good health b4 it had died? then i had a 2 yr old that was looking shabby with one of his eyes almost totally blocked with a light green gunk that i managed to treat with amoxicillin and the bird recovered within 2 days of treatment now today ive found a yearling that has tucked itself away in the corner of a nest box and is unable to walk? ive now put the bird in a basket away from the others with corn and water but it isnt showing any signs of trying to stand/walk or eat or drink even after ive tried dunking its beak into a bowl of water it has some light green gunk coming out of one eye but both of the eye ceres seem swollen so i will try the amoxicillin and hope it works but if anyone can give me advice as to what the problem might be then that would be great, ive had problems with mice around the loft so am thinking it could be salmonella which im told is the cause of paratyphoid is that correct any advice would be great as i really dont know what to do next debs

OLDYELLOW Posted August 1, 2010 Report Posted August 1, 2010 seems to me the biggest problem is treating blind with antibiotics , the gunk is probably hexamitiss ( canker ) or conjuntivitus ( excuses spelling ) or sat in a direct draught or respirity without seeing the bird / loft impossible to diagnose correctly , respirtry if you put you ear to back of bird you should be able to hear the lungs inflate deflate if crackly probably respirity but other loft factors maybe still an issue and certainly need to sort the rodent problem out , best way is to go to a vet and get a proper diagnoses , yearling dying could quite be a heart attack
peterpau Posted August 1, 2010 Report Posted August 1, 2010 Hmmm I'd treat for worms first. I never seperate. Then take a dead un for autopsy. If they have gone skinny or going light I'd look at treating for cocci a few days after the worm treatment. In the mean time while waitng for results from the vet I'd be using 5ml of bleach in the drinker then next day 10ml of cider vinegar or lemon juice, alternating daily till you get some results.
airdrie2 Posted August 1, 2010 Report Posted August 1, 2010 i always would take out of loft sick birds and treat had one two weeks ago that had been hawked and didnt notice claw mark under wing gangerine had set in before noticed and eyes swelling and greenish cleaned out wound and sprayed with dry anticeptic powder 1 week later the bird was allright to go back into the loft
