thanks for the info, birds dont seem overweight at all.......and not been bothered by hawks etc, but other years ive never noticed my ybs flying with the beaks open......just looked strange, one thing is that they are not flying for very long at all and have never been ranging, thats why i thought there was something not quite right with them.

No doubt in my mind there are something wrong

i have two teams of ybs, one are early bred which are nearly all paired up.......and the others are younger and some are just starting to pair up now. both teams have been on darkness altho the younger ones didnt quite get as far throught the moult as the older birds.

they never really got to flying much, they were just about to group togeather when i put them onto the dark......then all they wanted to do was walk around the garden or sit on the loft roof.

when i let them out for exercise ive started to let the younger birds out first, then when they look to be wanting to land i let the older ybs out......this way i can get a bit longer flying out of them.

david if theve never got round to flying and you have let em walk around garden they must be really unfitt now , put em on depurative

for 7 days and make em fly increasing gradually ,

dont pump antibiotics into them without getting em tested first :(

Mine were the same this time especially when coming from 7 mile training tosses, I sent swabs to vets and was advised the birds had e coli in the throat and a respiratory infection, a 7 day course of linco spectin and everything back to normal.............but be careful before treating get them tested first.......a similar thing was happening about 8 years ago and once i moved them from 7 miles to 20 they were fine, i think they must have tried real hard to get home.

David i have had a similiar problem here this year. Mine were flying very well, but then percy decided to reek havoc, and although he is not a problem any more my birds never really regained the confidence to fly as long as they did. Mine were panting on the days they did decide to fly more than 15 mins or so. It is a sign of unfit on a normal day, the same as they do if you let them out after a winter lock up.

I just started mine training in small gradual steps, 3, 6, 10, 15 miles etc and now they fine and racing fit. I would only treat if you are 100% sure they have a problem or could make things worse, if in doubt get them checked out!
