Loft Trap

I got this picture from wikipedia,I am trying to build a similar trap does anyone out there know the correct spacings the bars are set at for the birds to be able to enter the loft through the top of the trap, but prevent them from exiting through the same section of the trap ? I assume the birds jump and flap to exit the trap again but with open wings cant get back through ?

as long as a pigeon has enough room to get through thats enough m8 closer together u can have opening the less chance of birds geting back out i would say approx 4in apart

Might be less for fancy breeds but those that want to will still get through.

thats the same trap "Babybird" has , the space between the bars is 4 1/4 " and top to bottom is 14" (but i beleive 12" would be sufficent ) .           andy.

you beat me to it andy . Only thing I would add is a flap to stop the cats getting in and oh some plastic covering stuff for a bit of shelter from the elements

That looks a nice trap but there are some problems with it. It needs to be weather proof. The last thing you need is a wet loft. You need to be able to close it against cats and things. And your birds will quickly learn how to get out of it no matter what spacings you use between the bars. You could use bob wires on the inside so that the birds can drop down inside the loft as they exit the trap. You can then build your ETS pad into the trap and have the birds trap in  to some seed.

Have to agree, the birds will always find a way out of that trap and drive you mad, bob wires are a good idea when you get them in to slow them down for the ets. plus dont put it anywhere near a flat roof, try make it the only place they can land.

Dont really see many of these traps now, used to have one years ago (not sure of the size of the gap) but if a bird is determined enough to get out they will and usually when your waiting for your racers. If you are racing to an empty loft or your hens are locked up then its fine, just be careful if there are birds with access to this while racing, it could ruin your race.
