Guest Posted August 11, 2005 Report Posted August 11, 2005 To get this topic of the ground, what would you recomend as the best fancy pigeon to trap with?
Guest Posted August 11, 2005 Report Posted August 11, 2005 Fantails do the job for me, but you have to bring the young birds up with them, as if you start throwing fantails about on the first race and there not used to the white, they crap themselves.
mealybar Posted August 11, 2005 Report Posted August 11, 2005 They certainly do! thats a mistake I wont be repeating again..haha Now I keep my fantail in with my ybs they soon get used to them, but you get some funny looks for the first few days.lol I use an Indian Fantail, they do the job well enough for me
birdbrain Posted August 11, 2005 Report Posted August 11, 2005 i would recommend fantails aswell as they do not like to fly much!!! my dad added the white birds when he was feeding the young birds. and soon the birds start to learn that the white pigeons are assosiated with food...
PIGEON_MAN Posted August 11, 2005 Report Posted August 11, 2005 WHY IS THERE ANY NEED TO USE A TRAPPER SURELY IF THE BIRDS ARE MOTIVATED ENOUGH THEY WILL COME IN ON THEIR OWN.THIS IS SOMETHING THAT I HAVE NEVER DONE BUT I HAVE READ THAT IN SOME PARTS OF THE COUNTRY IT SEEMS TO BE THE NORM.
THE FIFER Posted August 11, 2005 Report Posted August 11, 2005 I HAVE 6 WHITE FANTAILS AND 4 WESTIES WHICH ARE IN THE YOUNG BIRD LOFT
mealybar Posted August 11, 2005 Report Posted August 11, 2005 WHY IS THERE ANY NEED TO USE A TRAPPER SURELY IF THE BIRDS ARE MOTIVATED ENOUGH THEY WILL COME IN ON THEIR OWN.THIS IS SOMETHING THAT I HAVE NEVER DONE BUT I HAVE READ THAT IN SOME PARTS OF THE COUNTRY IT SEEMS TO BE THE NORM. Your bird comes straight in, you win, your bird goes round you lose. I wouldnt like to take the chance, not with competition being so fearce!
PIGEON_MAN Posted August 11, 2005 Report Posted August 11, 2005 I SUPPOSE IN SOME AREAS WHAT YOU SAY MEALYBAR IS CORRECT BUT FANCIERS WHERE I AM DONT BOTHER WITH TRAPPERS.
snowy Posted August 11, 2005 Report Posted August 11, 2005 got a nine year old west of england , hes always down first, done the trick for me
snowy Posted August 11, 2005 Report Posted August 11, 2005 my westie hen flew off too, but got a cross i think out the bargain pages £5.00, shes got 2 different coloured eyes, but they are on eggs at the moment. & hes on the eggs more than her.
Guest Posted August 12, 2005 Report Posted August 12, 2005 This year i used a hen with a broken wing as a trapper and if i didn't use her i wouldn't have won the National! The hen was nervous as soon as i threw the trapper bang she was right behind her!
Guest NUMA Posted August 13, 2005 Report Posted August 13, 2005 i use a fantail. it just walks on the loft roof and when a yb comes i throw a little corn down, the fantail goes in and takes the yb with it. ive also tried tipplers but the bloody thing flew for hours : after a couple of races i don't use anything the ybs trap well on their own
Guest shadow Posted August 14, 2005 Report Posted August 14, 2005 I use two fantail crossed with tipplers which live in the young bird loft They encourage the the young birds out and when the young birds are up and flying they stop with them and give them a good work out Athough as soon as the young birds start wanting to range they give up. On race day I let them out about an hour before the racebirds are due. then when one is seen coming in the trappers are trained to dive for the trap after a tit bit is thrown for them as the young birds get more confindence at returning from races I may not use them but they are good if you get a bird thats a bit nervous and wants to sit out let the trapper out who may fly up to him then call them in together amazing how it works. Even with old bird the trappers are happy to just walk along te verandah in front of the loft. I think just seeing them there gives the incoming birds more confidence that there are no predators about.e.g. cats
Guest Posted August 18, 2005 Report Posted August 18, 2005 yes pigeon _man that is what i think and ive never been diappointed with the trapping aspect of my birds thst is one part of pigeon racing i never have to worry about and certanley were i live they very rareley use trappers
