Guest joshdonlan Posted June 10, 2010 Report Posted June 10, 2010 This morning I got the YBs out which have been out for a couple of months now and they flew for nearly 1 hour, but the wind got up a little at times. When they trapped back in 1 has a broken leg and im 1 missing. What could of happend? Could the wind have blown them into a wire? Or do you think another hawk has moved in and chased them into something? They didnt seem to scitish when they trapped though
OLDYELLOW Posted June 10, 2010 Report Posted June 10, 2010 young birds tend to dance and deviate from a straight flying pattern and may have hit a wire and perhaps the other ones hit it worse , is it a ring leg the birds broken ? i tend not to let my birds out in high winds due to the amount of areils around my house
Guest joshdonlan Posted June 10, 2010 Report Posted June 10, 2010 Fortunately not got a ring on. Im off to Taylors in a bit to get some splints. How long do they usually take to heal? I cant see a major snap in the leg, but there is definitely damage there. Hopefully the other one will work in when i get the rest out again.
Guest mick bowler Posted June 10, 2010 Report Posted June 10, 2010 Josh, sounds like wire/obstruction. Unless you want to keep it as a pet remove it. Inexperienced YBs will go out eventually, unlike old birds that can recover. It happens to me on a regular basis here, and every YB i have hit the wires eventually get lost or put down if too bad. I have 3 here waiting to go, unable to fly.

They didnt seem to scitish when they trapped though 6 weeks ago,my youngbirds had been rangeing well for several weeks,i was well pleased with them, then one day, instead of them all returning together, they were coming back in ones and twos all afternoon.at the end of the day i was 8 missing, the next day i got 3 back, and i had to kill all 3,broken legs smashed keels etc.the other 5 that were missing have never been heard of again, all had telephone rings on , but none reported, think they must have hit something and all are dead.
Guest joshdonlan Posted June 10, 2010 Report Posted June 10, 2010 Right ive got the hen in a box - she was unrung, but potential stock, was going to train her though. The break seems to be in the ankle as it seems loose there. I have bought a pack of splints, but seems pointless splinting it. Would anyone else splint it? Its a shame about the one missing, a big black pied cock. Hopefully someone will find him this evening and call me, fingers crossed. So far this is the first i have lost and hopefully the last, but i doubt it. Thanks
p charlton Posted June 10, 2010 Report Posted June 10, 2010 ive had 2 due to the dam rings one all what keeping the leg on was its tendans i just put carboad ond plasters and tape shes fine now the other one i just left its fine now

My friend splinted a strays badly broken leg with a matchstick and sellotape. The bird made a good recovery and, when I returned it to it's owner, it turned out it was a prize winner and he sent me a cheque for £30!! Hope your missing bird works it's way back.
Tony C Posted June 10, 2010 Report Posted June 10, 2010 Put it away in a spare box with loads of straw in. No need for splints being so low down, the pigeon will position itself in such a way that it'll fix better without our interference. Give it around 6-7 days then place it back in the racing loft, it may still hold its leg up and/or limp but its better off with its mates.
Guest joshdonlan Posted June 10, 2010 Report Posted June 10, 2010 its in a box in the loft away from the others, i think it should heal ok due to where the brake is and also its a clean break so should fuse back nicely i hope he works back in too or its 1 less for racing
