Hi All,

My new loft is due in the coming weeks and soon I'll be populating it with real Pigeons !

My question is as follows ; If you were in my position, what birds would you look to stock ? Do I go for a team of latebreds which I can both race and breed from next year or would you go for a mix of young birds and some breeding stock to give me a yearling and a y/b team for next year.

I know that the answer will be somewhat based on the system I intend to fly which is also dependent on the loft size.

The loft is 20' x 8', with three separate compartments - all are doweled sections and each contains their own "open door" if necessary, although two of these compartments have Sputnik traps also. I have a 12' x 6' aviary which I could add to any of three sides of the loft if necessary.

I am open-minded right now as to what system I decide to fly and would welcome any input that the more experienced fanciers have on here which would help

Thanks for reading,

I would suggest you approach a good fancier who lives near you and buy as many late breds as he will sell you, or as many as you can afford, Pair up around last week FEB or first in March, to give the hens as much time to mature as possible before asking them to lay eggs. For the first year i would race Natural, its less complicated and you'll get a look at which birds respond to the various stages of the nest cicle, that could give you a pointer to how you would like to race them in the coming years. Just bear in mind you are about to start a LONG TERM project, so be patient, enjoy your birds, and find the system that suits you and your doos. All the very best to you. :)

go for birds off of winners not stock that last flew out 2-3 generations ago,

System I would fly cocks and hens seperate, just look up celabacy systems, then if it does not work you can always pair them.

Oh also sent you a pm

i was to start from scratch again i would purchase 12-16 late breds off 2 fanciers winning locally 6-8 one that does well on sprint and 6-8 off other for distance and start from there and do the darkness for youngsters and race natural old birds JMO
