Guest Mark_T Posted May 18, 2010 Report Posted May 18, 2010 As in the title - found WHU2009N01200 to the north of Weston-super-Mare. Also has blue racing(?) band on left leg. I believe it crashed into our kitchen window as heard a bang - only saw the bird sitting on the window ledge when I went to get a coffee. Have fed with corn and sunflower hearts (it ate quite happily) and have given water. Seems exhausted and a bit dazed, though looks uninjured. Have phoned WHU but on answerfone. Bird seems quite tame and will attempt to catch and put in a travel cage, as I fear if it's left overnight it will get had by one of the foxes or one of next doors cats! Can be contacted on 01934 429019
PIGEON_MAN Posted May 18, 2010 Report Posted May 18, 2010 The owner of the pigeon is a member of the Torfaen Club in Pontypool ,the secretary,s name and number is MR.G.TREMEER 01495 758536.If you give him a ring he will get in touch with the owner but unless you have the bird contained there is not much the owner can do.Thanks for what you have done so far.
Guest Mark_T Posted May 18, 2010 Report Posted May 18, 2010 Caught the bird and checked it's flights for a phone number. There was one so managed to contact the owner who wasn't particularly interested that a) the bird had crashed or that I was now looking after it. Was told to "keep it overnight then take it somewhere away from the house and let it go .... expect it will be OK"! Don't you pigeon racers care about your birds? He seems to be a really lovely bird - very calm and easy to handle. Just hope when I let him go tomorrow he finds his way home, or perhaps it'd be better if he found his was to a more caring owner!
rasbull Posted May 18, 2010 Report Posted May 18, 2010 Sorry to hear the owner had that attitude Mark. It makes genuine pigeon fanciers mad that there is a small majority in the pigeon sport who sadly share the attitude of the fancier you described. I can assure you the vast majority of fanciers would only have been to glad for the care you have shown this bird had it been one of theirs. I reported one the other day who shared the same attitude but for everyone you get like that you get 5 that are only to grateful. Indeed I reported one the other night and the bloke travelled 50 miles within 3 hours of me making contact with him. He had lost 60 in one training toss and had 5 reported and had collected them all. I hope you will continue to report any that come into your garden and the vast majority would be very grateful. Thank you for your efforts and may I apologise on behalf of this person. In his defence, a lot of birds do just need a little help, a bit of food and water and they go on there way and make a safe return to their loft but as you said the bird appeared injured and therefore the person should have given this matter more attention than he obviously did. Guest Mark_T Posted May 18, 2010 Report Posted May 18, 2010 Hi Richard, It's not the first we have had and I doubt it'll be the last. We seem to be on a 'route' across to Wales. Had one bird that lived on our roof for a couple of weeks and seemed to get 'in' with a load of fantail doves that live at a house up the road! I reported him after spending ages trying to spot his ring number through the bino's. And another that we managed to catch after it was stalked by one of the neighbours cats - again I phoned the owner and he wanted me to deliver it to him over the bridge to Wales, some 60 or 70 miles away I'm more than happy to help these birds; I keep other types of bird myself so can handle them, but it seems each time I do find one sitting in the garden I get the same kind of response. Perhaps it's because they are all WHU birds? No idea why they seem to always come down in our garden - almost as if they know they'll get fed and watered and protected from the foxes/cats/sparrowhawks. The bird seems quite happy in the travel cage - he's been stuffing his face with corn and is much more alert now - so I'll take him to an open space tomorrow and launch him, and hope he goes the right way across the water. Thanks for the encouragement - glad to hear not every pigeon keeper is as cold hearted as the old buffer I spoke with this afternoon. Mark.
Gail J Posted May 18, 2010 Report Posted May 18, 2010 Hi Mark Thank you for reporting the bird and sorry I missed your call today, yes our members care about their birds but unfortunately there is always one. I have your number and will contact you tomorrow when I check who the owner is

Guest Mark_T Posted May 19, 2010 Report Posted May 19, 2010 Thanks for all the replies everyone, however I launched the bird at 8am this morning and really hope he now finds his way back to his loft. He was much more alert this morning and a bit more fiesty when I picked him up. He had eaten quite a bit, and was still stuffing his face when I took him off in the car, so hopefully has recovered from his ordeal. Just hope his owner doesn't see him as a 'failed' bird I may be back in the future when the next one lands on us!! Mark.
Gail J Posted May 19, 2010 Report Posted May 19, 2010 Hi Guys The bird has returned to Mark, are any of you in the area or near Kewstoke Village, Weston-Super-Mare that could help while I arrange for pick up please?
BLUERON Posted May 19, 2010 Report Posted May 19, 2010 thanks for helping with lost pigeon.my litte lad keeps them. and its nice to know there are people out there who will help them if they get lost
Guest Mark_T Posted May 19, 2010 Report Posted May 19, 2010 Hopefully a good outcome. Thanks to Gail who had a 'chat' with the owner, he called and came over from Wales to collect the bird this evening. Evidently had been released in France last week some time. So am hoping that's the last I see of N01200, even though he (it) was a really nice bird. Still don't quite understand why after letting him go about 2 miles away at 8am this morning, he was back knocking on my kitchen window at 1:30 and then had the cheek to hop into the house when I opened the window Obviously liked the board and lodgings! Anyhow, thanks for all the help everyone, especially Gail. Mark.
Gail J Posted May 19, 2010 Report Posted May 19, 2010 Great news Mark and thanks for your patience, hopefully it won't stop you from reporting birds in the furure. He must have listened for him to pick up tonight and not tomorrow. Alls well that ends well
Guest Owen Posted May 19, 2010 Report Posted May 19, 2010 I have no idea as to the details in regard to this lost bird. But I think that our organisations are far to easy on the people who refuse to take up their responsibilities when the birds are lost. This is particulary bad when there is a member of the Public involved. I know it can be expensive if a Fancier looses a lot of birds but if they can not afford to recover them they should not send so many to the races. In this day and age Public image is important because we need all the help we can get on all sorts of issues. We certainly can not afford to create a bad name with the Public. It would be a bit like cutting our noses off to spite our faces.
