hi dave

are ur young birds ranging or touring yet: ie: going of for 20 mins

or so if they are then by all means put them in the basket,me personaly

i start mine at 10 miles, reason being when they are touring they go out further

than that. also have u basket trained them yet ,putting them in the basket

with the drinker hooked on, this will help them when they start racing to me

this is important they must learn to drink on the transporter.good luck m8

i only used 20 mins as an example, sounds like they are ready ,if i were u

i would go when the sky is a bit quiter, when the sky is not full of old

birds ,u will have to decide when that is ,and the distance is up to u

once again good luck

Just be carful dave mate, i know your keen, but very cold still at the moment, and east winds, no rush mate, And a mile is a complete waist of time in my view, if they are going off for a good while, Have you had them in the baskets much? with water troughs on? Get them in the basket as much as you can, and drinking from them, I normally feed them at night, in the loft, and catch them and basket them, with water troughs on, so they have no water in loft, after a couple of times they soon learn how to drink, i havent done it yet this year with mine due to not had time, but will get them in the basket this saturday all day, then i can clean them out too!! feathers everywhere. :)

Hello again Dave, How many birds you got and are they all around the same age?.

I have 16 yb`s and they are at diffrent stages and only a hand full are out at the moment flying. The rest are just hang around the house and garden doing nothing much else.

In my opinion, your YBs will learn more ranging than training. They will cover many miles round the compass from your loft, learning their home territory and how to home from any point in it to their loft. There will come a time when they mature sexually, and become more interested in each other than flying. That's the best time to start training.

And pick carefully your training days and distances. Remember they have probably toured 15/20 miles radius from loft, so 1 mile is an insult to the birds' intelligence.

personally i wouldnt start training yet let them range they will learn more that way and tbh a mile is a waste of time i would start at 10ml and keep them there theres more yb losses from shorter distances than starting longer jmo and at the momment theres alot of birds floating about and the weather is just not good enough yet for yb training m8

i personally wouldnt start training til at least 2/3 weeks before first race, take ur time with em.....thats one thing ive learnt over the years....and i start at a couple of mile m8,and do not train em on race day!!! nothin worse than spendin all that time n effort bringing them up,then a bad chuck kicks u in the teeth,

Also - just thought of it - there's training & training. :) Have you basket trained your birds? Have they spent at least one overnight in basket, eating & drinking OK in it?

It depends, if they're flying for anywhere up to an hour from the loft and ranging for around 20 minutes like the others have said, then I'd say you're safe with tossing them from a bit further afield. I normally only start tossing at a mile for my birds on the darkening system because they haven't usually had as much experience because they're younger.

im going to give my birds the weekend off from going out due to the weather and worm them for 2 days. then im gunna basket train them for a couple of days. then let them have a couple of days around the loft then they can start training that should leave me with 4 weeks till first race just hope the weather stays good :):) and the hawks be good to me aswell :lol::lol: [cant see it]

my first training toss for the youngsters is in the park which is about 500yds away,i find that this then sets them up for the next one which is 1 mile away,i then go up to 5 miles and 10 miles up to a maximum of 30 miles.each training toss is repeated untill they get it right then we move on to next place.but try to find out what suits you and your birds, theres no rush.paul :)

hi dave, if your birds are ranging well, they will learn your area naturally, flying further and further afield, once you start training them, they will stop this!!, and once you start training them, they are better for being trained each day [weather permitting], so the more they range b4 training the better, so personally i wouldnt be in to much of a hurry, i would be more concerned in making sure they are very well basket trained i,e. eating and drinking from the basket, and having no fear of the basket b4 tossing them, three weeks b4 the first yb race in my opinion is plenty time, if your yb,s have been ranging well untill then , they will easily go 5,,,10 ,,15 miles within a few days [each stage twice], they should then do 30 miles tosses regular, good luck
