Guest cosmic dave Posted May 6, 2010 Report Posted May 6, 2010 OK this is how I am feeding at the moment. I have only got 6 birds at the moment so they get two handfuls of feed first thing, nothing all day then let out to fly at about 5 o clock in the evening, they fly for a couple of hours or so then I put the feed back in the trap and the birds can have all they want till they start to roost and the food is then removed. I did find if I gave them a good feed first thing they would sit on the roof and not fly. Are the birds getting enough food ?
OLDYELLOW Posted May 6, 2010 Report Posted May 6, 2010 even if you fed them once a day they'd get enough feed but better to give a little as your doing
Guest cosmic dave Posted May 6, 2010 Report Posted May 6, 2010 Ok, they have started to lounge on the roof again before trapping. It wont hurt if I don't feed them in the morning and see how quickly they come back in after they fly tomorrow evening then will it ?
pigeonpete Posted May 6, 2010 Report Posted May 6, 2010 You need control over the ybs mate, or they will get into the habit of going on the house roof, and will always do it then, mine only get fed once a day at the moment at night, all they want till 3 or 4 go for a drink, they are on peas and beans at the moment, so dont fly much, which im glad of, as havent got the time for them at the moment, but will get the mix lightened up this weekend, to help them fly better, but still need lots of protein, as mine are dropping to bits at the moment (darkness) But they are doing as there told now, as soon as i step in thatc loft there after me!!! all the best with them mate.

Guest stb- Posted May 6, 2010 Report Posted May 6, 2010 give then a very small amount of feed half hour before you let em out , make em fly for an hour give them a small amount on trapping then feed as mu as they want in the evening till the first un goes for a drink then remove food

When I wean, I leave the food with them 24/7 for a couple of days till they get the hang of it. No doubt others will do it differently but, with my babies I don't want them hungry!! I can always cut back on the food later to get them to trap when I call them.

Are the birds getting enough food ? hi cosmic dave,, in my opinion birds are getting enough food,.... hungry birds wont fly,, but a happy medium to be able to control them can be worked out by yourself,, maybe just a handful of light feed in the morning would suffice for 6 birds, especially after being well fed the night b4 ,,good luck
