hi everyone, just thought id say hello, its been a while,  :)

i have kind of lost heart a little with my birds and at the moment plan to just stick at the four i have left, after seeing a sparrowhawk take my favorite bird out of my tree and eat it in the field, ive decided to leave it at that for this year.

however i am planning in my mind  ::) a new loft in the summer as mine is falling into disrepair, so maybe that will get me back in the mood

anyway hope you are all well and happy

Hi Samantha

Nice to hear from you again,

sorry to hear about your trouble ,  KEEP YOUR CHIN UP GIRL

As you say take your time through the summer and do the work on your loft

Rember all the good times with the birds, bet they out weigh the bad.

All the best

Hi Samantha

When you replace your loft, make sure you put an aviary on the side so the birds can get out in the fresh air instead of leaving them out. Hawks seem to be on the prowl more so at this time of year so they are just sitting ducks (well pigeons LOL). When I let mine out at this time of year I make sure they never sit on the house or loft roof, just out for a fly and straight back in. I know you want to keep them natural and flying out but its impossible nowadays with all these hawks about. Nice to see you are back, I was wondering were you had been lately.

Good to see you posting again - I missed ya, me friend! ;)

Must have been awful seeing the hawk get one of your birds.....I don't know how I'll cope with something like that........I've already been told that I'll have to toughen up when I start training my youngsters.....two baby fantails and four eggs under homers!

Keep trucking on gal.

u usually get a break from the hawks when they start to feed youngsters, as they look for smaller food. mice sparrows etc, also if u ar getting bother, do not let ur birds out before 12 noon or after 5pm, this is when they ar looking for food, they will have had some before 12, but need more before roosting, also do not let ur birds out the same time each day the hawks know when and where to get them if u do, this may not solve ur problem but can help a bit,

Hi Samantha. This is just a personal observation, but if your birds are allowed out, after a while they will become Hawk Aware and losses will be minimal, especially where Sparrow Hawks are concerned, cannot test this theory on peregrines as i am not bothered by them. You will lose a couple in the early stages, but it does work.
