Ian,

Asked one of the local lads about the food for flying tumblers as he flys irsh ft's. He said anyone he asked and he himself uses

3 parts peas

2 parts wheat

1 part maize

Increase quantity in the winter and also increase the amount of peas.

Go and buy a depuritive mix - wheat, barley, red/white dari, buy it already mixed various brands sell it. This will take any excess weight of them, every now or again a handful of condition of mixed canary seed will go down well. Fly them regular every day if they will do it and you might start to see some better performances even tumbles.

If your that keen on them you have two choices - find someone who has genuine WOE flying tumblers (not many about these days) or cross something in to them like a good quality well marked Iranian Tumbler or Turkish Mardin Tumbler then try and bring that tumbling into the wests - I will take you a good few years and is hit and miss if it will work.

We used to have Birmingham rollers on a depuritive mix ect, were great rollers. sold them to another guy and he said they never rolled as good so their must be something in correcting the diet :)

Agree, this breed is extremely popular for showing now so you would struggle to find some genuine "flyers",they would need to be kept/fed and managed more like racing pigeons.

I had a pair of wests a few years ago. I had them for about a year and never saw any tumbels except for 1 week when the cock did a few flips whenever he was out. I tried everything with the feed and could nvere get him to do it again. It might still be in some of them if you can coax it out. Like someone said though, an awful lot of them are bred for show and most probably nver fly out.

I also think you need a decent kit to start with and like all pigeon habits, the young would learn to copy, even though it is natural to them I still think they learn more by mimicing older birds:-/

I think you are right to a certain extent. A kit of rollers will stimulate each other into breaks. But I flew my wests with the roller kit and it never made any difference.

Hi Steve.

The ones I had were the first pigeons I got, they were show birds from John Stark but I got them for flying out.

let me know if you get anywhere with your pal and the other birds.

Cheers.

Al.
