Guest Silverwings Posted February 1, 2006 Report Posted February 1, 2006 have a note in my info book regarding the sex determination of youngsters in the nest ,it relates to the theory the two outside claws of equal length will be a hen and one of the claws being slightly longer will be a cock ? or vice -versa anyone know of this or looked into it ? ..........ray
Diamond dave Posted February 1, 2006 Report Posted February 1, 2006 Hi Silver - interesting - does the note say how old the youngsters have to be?
Guest Posted February 1, 2006 Report Posted February 1, 2006 Ray, that's what I use to determine the sex of a baby, find it about 95% correct
Guest Posted February 1, 2006 Report Posted February 1, 2006 Dave I was checking some babies this morning, that were about 14 days old and the toes were well developed enough to measure
Diamond dave Posted February 1, 2006 Report Posted February 1, 2006 Hyacinth Is it actually obvious when you look or is it very slight
Guest Posted February 1, 2006 Report Posted February 1, 2006 with Babies so young it is slight but you can see it, remember to get the toes lined up very evenyl
Guest Silverwings Posted February 1, 2006 Report Posted February 1, 2006 Dave .will back the post by hyacinth ? she seems to be on to this .be a good idea to take som data from this years crop and see how they work out ? ......ray
Diamond dave Posted February 1, 2006 Report Posted February 1, 2006 Is it possible to see it when ringing - say 7/8days?
THE FIFER Posted February 1, 2006 Report Posted February 1, 2006 I ALWAYS LOOK FOR THE ONE WHICH STANDS UP WHEN U PUT UR HAND IN THE NEST AND PUFFS ITS NECK AND PICKES AT U AS BEING A COCK
Guest Posted February 1, 2006 Report Posted February 1, 2006 Ah but some of us can breed evil hens <VBG>
Guest Posted February 1, 2006 Report Posted February 1, 2006 No harm in trying and seeing at that age
bewted Posted February 1, 2006 Report Posted February 1, 2006 the idea of toe length came up over twenty years when i use to race,it is correct in toe length, but,so long ago, unable to remember which way around,,,,ted
jimmy white Posted February 1, 2006 Report Posted February 1, 2006 trying to remember way back my old dad saying that the 2 outside toes between the centre toe can deternine the sex of the squab, the hen youngster has toes of equal length, and the cocks two outside toes are slightly differant in size, as in later ln life its the cock that treads the hen, and seemingly for grip or balance, but true or not im not sure [the old so and so was not wrong very often]thats about 50 years ago he said that :)
bewted Posted February 2, 2006 Report Posted February 2, 2006 he had a good grip on your mum then, must have had unequal toes,,haha no offence jimmy pal, bestis mate!!!

snowy Posted February 2, 2006 Report Posted February 2, 2006 its supposed to be the same with humans, not all men, but some with high testosterone levels their ring fingers are bigger, mine for example is quite a big difference, look at your own , then look at your partners & you will see the difference. ;D http://www.abc.net.au/science/bernie/news/s43596.htm

Peckedhen Posted February 2, 2006 Report Posted February 2, 2006 I read somewhere that if you look at the vent of a squab it either apears to smile or be turmed down as in a sad mouth. Trouble is I cant remember which was cock and which was hen! Does anyone ele know of this method? :-/
Guest Posted February 2, 2006 Report Posted February 2, 2006 Think me hormone levels are ok but me brain cells certainly aren't!!!!! ;D Me fingers are all different sizes and dinnae ken which is my second and which is my fourth, which side do you count from? If the index the second, then it must surely be bigger than the pinkie (the fourth) .... even counting my right pinkie which is also crookit?
