pigeons have always been called every name under the sun. has anyone ever put are case foward i would say no, its about time we had a press officer as in my opinion i think pigeon people do alot for good causes and its about time we blew our own trumpet.

Unfortunately if the anti pigeon brigade make enough noise, they will be heard, it sells newspapers and makes the natives restless.

Unfortunately in The states several cities are now having Zoning problems, with people making ridiculous complaints regarding Pigeons.  St. Pauls/Minneapolis are the new target, there is a hearing on Monday when they could bring in an Ordinances forbidding people to keep pigeons unless they have at lease 5 acres of land.  One of the noise makers claims that her plants in the garden are being destroyed by the mites from her neighbours pigeons.  Jeeeeze.

We are now trying to reap from what we should have sown many years ago, in other words we should have been making dammed sure that our neighbours knew exactly what racing pigeons are so as not to confuse them with streeters.  We cannot expect our National Organisations to come and put a plaster on the wound, if we at the grass roots are not willing to spend some time promoting Racing Pigeons.

Just my thoughts

Copied and pasted from an article published in St. Paul's Pioneer Press

,The city learned that Dao was housing pigeons after Reuter complained last year. His primary concern was about potential disease, and his wife complained that pigeon mites could be ruining her garden. A county health worker told Eagan officials it was unlikely that the pigeons posed any health-related problems, however.>

the quote by fifer printed in brunos reply was on page 321 teletex itv on Saturday which in my mind was unfounded, why don't we ban a paper a week which prints this type of rubbish or is there some place you can report newspapers etc foe the fabrications they print.

Edited your quote down to show bit I'm picking up on: If you link your idea with 'need a bigger voice' posts in the thread, maybe its about time we called upon our many supported charity friends to lend US their support and perhaps add some kudos to our case.

Especially the 'medical' ones like British Heart Foundation, which because of their human health background, ordinary people might be more likely to listen to and believe, if it comes from them rather than us.

100% bruno, they are the ones which should be giving their views, there is a chance people will listen to them rather the the fancies, my opinion is we are being trodden on, and its like hyacinth say's the bulic has a big voice, and the political people must go by them whether they think they are right or not its for votes, what chance in a town with 20 odd pigeon fanciers and 3-4 thousand non fanciers going against pigeons, answer NIL:

what amazes me is most towns and back gardens are over-run with crows (SCAVENGERS) dropping poo all over the place, eating the smaller birds and yet no body is bothering about doing anything about them, and if the pigeon fancier complains about them or hawks, they are just trying to protect their pigeons as what the public and powers that be think, and its the same here with the flu.

fifer never chase the crow away, encourage it to stay and nest and it will rid your loft area of any hawks, please trust me on this.perhaps the magpie is what you may be thinking on.

you must not read the homing world and peter bryants write ups he does a very good job replying to false reports when he is told of them :)

Hi

Peter Bryant has done a great job for the English pigeon fanciers over this Flu problem. No one could have done more and look at the work they are putting in to ensure that some form of racing takes place Not so over in Belgium They can at the present time race only to the Belgium Border and that will be around 50 odd miles for a lot of fanciers

the local council round here has started looking into how many fanciers keep 50 or more pigeons and requiring them to be registered. (in case of an avian flu outbreak) at least that is their excuse :)

How can a local council over- rule DEFRA who don't require a register of pigeons.  Just another case of the Environmental guys sitting at their desks wondering what to do next. Point out to them DEFRA's requirements and explain gently that we work with DEFRA through our own registration body which has a register of every pigeon we have and that pigeons are not poultry.

DEFRA's rule on the requirement to register flocks of over 50 birds only applies to poultry not to pigeons, talk about twisting the rules!!!!!!!!!!!.Anybody keeping under 50 are not legally obliged to register but are advised to.

don't u believe it tartabboy, they chase the hawks but do not keep them away, but the biggest problem is the chase and kill ur birds as well i lost 8 2 years ago, carrion crows, they will even go in ur loft and take youngsters, but no they are deadly when nesting near u,

Posted

they are a nightmare jimmy if nesting near u,(CARRION CROWS) and its during the racing (APRIL) onwards they start ,a couple of years ago i had to shut up my loft for the year it was just impossible to let birds out, i still have them around yet so have to be very careful another local fancier got it last year, the nest which was givving me bother just seemed to vanish, don't know what happened to it, must have been the wind, but they are still about .

Posted

i seen it last year[seen the bother many times b4 that]a pair nesting in a tree, pretty close to a freind of mine, the crow, actualy caught a yb in mid air and killed it, i can assure you this is perfectly true, they were a complete pest for him , getting bolder and bolder,,,,,till they shifted

Posted

Fifer, disagree with you fifer the crows around this part of the country have never killed any of my pigeons, maybe im lucky with them?try feeding them you wont rue the day they nest near you.

Posted

NOT THE CARRION CROW IT WILL ATTACK ANYTHING IN ITS AREA WHEN NESTING, IS IT CARRION CROWS U HAVE OR THE ROOKS THE LATER ARE NO PROBLEM AND NEST IN MASS BUIT THE CARRION ONLY LETS ONE IN A TREE OR AREA.

Posted

i think maybe a mix up with carrion crow and rook as fifer said, the carrion will nest as a single pair, and will kill birds, the rooks are differant, and nest in colonies, the carriion crow can hybridise with the hooded crow and feeds on worms insects fruits vertebrates, eggs and birds, and can be seen mobbing birds of prey,,,,the rook, feeds on worms, snails, mice and seeds
