I think you'll find that under the current AI racing license regime (biosecurity) pigeon droppings are to be bagged and binned, with the local authority disposing of them as normal with the rest of the waste that goes to landfill sites.

Wouldn't be spreading them in the garden until you check-out the biosecurity guidance. If I can find it , I'll post.

Don't know for certain but have a look at the extract below. My reading of it was and still is: If it applies to the droppings that you carry home in the basket, seems sensible to assume that it also applies to the droppings cleared out of your loft:-

Conditions applying to gatherings for pigeon races and pigeon training events (into England from the British Isles): Biosecurity conditions to be applied:-

All litter and manure within the cages, crates or baskets must be contained until disposal. Any spillages outside the cage to be cleansed and disinfected immediately.

All litter and manure must be disposed of in a manner which does not present a risk of spread of the disease, e.g. in sealed bags for normal refuse collection in such a manner that other birds do not have direct access to it.

All exhibitors/entrants must be instructed to cleanse and disinfect the show cages, crates or baskets before the event and be advised that they should be cleansed and disinfected on return to the home premises and before they are used to hold any other bird.

2004 was a particularly bad year for me, and I didn't enjoy my pigeons at all. One of the many things that happened was in February I had a 'have you a minute' look from my next door neighbour; she then complained that for the last two summers she had been getting plagued with flies (co-incidently, my pigeons had arrived two years ago). She had noticed that these were very small flies as if newly hatched and had asked a pigeon fancier if pigeons caused flies and his reply (thanks very much) was 'Aye, no bloody half'.

So my pigeons had caused the flies in her house in the last two very hot summers, and I was hearing about it midwinter, two years later.

To cut a long story short, No flies breeding in my loft but  I used to mix the pigeon droppings with the garden compost, and wrap the whole lot up in polythene and store it over the winter at the bottom of the garden under the conifer hedge, then fork it in the following spring.

Had a good search around the garden and soon discovered that what I thought were needles from the hedge lying on top of the poly hap was in fact eggs - flies eggs. As composting generates heat, seems I created an ideal fly incubator.

I phoned Falkirk Council's Environmental Health Department and a guy came out same day: advised me to phone another Council Health department and ask for permission to put future droppings in the refuse bin. Did so and was told to bag droppings, seal the bag and put in bin - have done so ever since, and since the recycle scheme has come in, have put them in the green general bin, the one that goes to landfill.

Peckedhen, I looked at the rules for what goes into garden refuse bin for composting, but as putting food leftovers in that bin is barred in my Council area , I've stuck with the landfill one for the bird's droppings.

Ooh, I think you're right guys. :B

I think that, because I have so few birds, the droppings haven't been noticed. So, it's bagged and binned from now on! ;)

I put my droppings in a pit in the end of the garden and the neighbours collect them for their gardens.

the correct procudure is to tie them in plastic bags and put them in ur refuge bin, as u do with ur dogs poo, u get free bags for ur dogs at local council offices, this is the only place for it as ur refuge is the only one which is not recycled,
