westy Posted December 16, 2005 Report Posted December 16, 2005 I have and most pepole say it is too early. just want pepoles thougths all the best martin
Guest Posted December 16, 2005 Report Posted December 16, 2005 It depends on how you want race your YBs Westy, if you want to race darkness, then theres no need to have YBs so early, as they can be put on at a later date. The Ybs you rear now will go onto a natural darkness system with the lack of day hours in Jan. I think also the earlier you pair the earlier they will come into race form in the race season, as you will have more time to get them ready when they are split off. So if you aim is to win inland then you will be OK, I want to win the 400 to 550 miles races in my area so I pair up 2nd or 3rd week in Jan, may even be later this year so the early races are just warm ups. In 2004 I had two sections that were paired up at different times, the early pairings won inland and the later pairings won the channel races. I think some people pair early so they can have the YBs away and then can have a treatment plan B4 the races, but I wouldn't fall into that trap.
Peckedhen Posted December 16, 2005 Report Posted December 16, 2005 Hopefully next week when the weather warms again Westy. I'm still not sure if I have two pairs so the sooner I find out the better. :
carl Posted December 16, 2005 Report Posted December 16, 2005 Not yet for me westy as all will go onto the darkness,i will pair up around the 10th of january,i pick the 10th because its worked ok for me for the last two seasons and my youngbirds have flown well.
Guest Posted December 16, 2005 Report Posted December 16, 2005 We fly darkness so we pair our birds up for the race team exactly 6 months before the first YB race. We have had our birds together since last weekend, to raise our Futurity Team
Guest Posted December 16, 2005 Report Posted December 16, 2005 ITS FAR TO COLD IN FACT ITS FREEEEEEEEEEEEZIN SAVE YOUR SELF MONEY WAIT TILL END OF FEB :-/
andy Posted December 16, 2005 Report Posted December 16, 2005 I pair stock birds up after Blackpool, with one section of yearlings, next section on 1st Feb & channel team on 20th Feb. All youngsters on Darkness until May 25th...
jimmy white Posted December 16, 2005 Report Posted December 16, 2005 i dont think its too early for you, as you are not racing old birds, and this is your first season, and you need a team of ybs, i wouldnt normally advice this, if you were racing obs, but you would have some ybs on natural darkness, that will have a body moult and hold there flights, you will then have some natural ybs later, you could race the early ones right out, then maybe keep some of the later ones, after training and a few races, as you have to think of next year, the losses in the last few years have been quite big, so the old saying goes, dont put all your eggs in the one basket
Guest Posted December 16, 2005 Report Posted December 16, 2005 Agree with Jimmy, Westy. You're out to breed your 1st team of youngbirds, so its all new, and good experience for you. This time next year you'll be able to look back and say ..... yes I'll do it again, or I'll do it differently. 8) Word of caution... forecasters say this winters to be damned cold. My "1st" was Jan 1st 2003 and it turned bloody cold later that month. Recall 10 day old youngsters 'fully' feathered but no parents covering them during sub-zero nights, ended up with every primary & secondary fret marked..
THE FIFER Posted December 16, 2005 Report Posted December 16, 2005 I pair up after Blackpool, but have aquired a pair of birds from "PORTER&RICHARDSON" so will probably be puting them together early and get some eggs from them,
