I only mentioned this beacuse of our wicked race last week, the older experienced birds were first home and the yearlings trickled in

Mine go half the final distance they are intended for and double the distance in total beforehand. ie 600 mile race. Need to do half that distance, 300 miles 3/4 weeks beforehand.  Also,a further 900 miles in training and racing before our target 600miler. This is for 2 yr olds. Yearlings go 350 miles. Young birds 200 miles. I got this from a book and it works. But Hyacinth your yealings from last week had a tough time of it and I'd rest 'em. But then I know what works for me. Other people have very different ideas, that work for them. Our birds will start a week on Friday and everyone else will have had at least two races by then. The yearlings won't be out till May.

For me I send them to the early races to build up a bit of muscle, then into 350miles and then rested until a fortnight B4, when I train a few times and then into 550miles. I am going to try lightly racing a few yearlings this year and giving them a few early races next year and hopefully into 550miles.

Rose I put me post up hoping for other peoples ideas. I want to try things a bit different this year, and I am fascinated what Hyacinth will do with her yearlings. Our club sec was 10th MNFC with a yearling from Bergerac 535mls but I wouldn't dare. But after visiting Mike Young I knew I couldn't do what he did. We're getting nearer now though.

hi ted,

how old was the bird & how long did you have him?

did he only fly round the loft & roam?

we have three races each week so we rotate the birds, to the longer ones, but we always have a 125 so we send a team of 4 or 5 to that one

I take my hat off to you Hyacinth, those birds cover a lot of miles. What sort of percentage will you end up with at the end of the season. I'm still fascinated to know. Will you be sending the yearlings this week

It's a hard season Peter, we always seem to have a bad one from 200 miles and get losses from there.  We have changed the race point and will be flying it next week.  On average we retain 75% of our Old bird team, but we never know what's around the next corner.

The weather forecast is good for this weekend, so the Yearlings will be going to the 166 miler and we are kicking the hens in for the 125 (5 bird limit) the rest will go as trainers to be released 1/2 hour after the race goes out.

If you do happen to make contact with anyone in Jerry Yates Club this week please let him know that Old Foo Fighter bred last weeks winner.
