lawrie Posted December 2, 2007 Report Posted December 2, 2007 Hi, im new to this forum and thought i would start with a daft question. is it ok to keep say a pouter pigeon in the same loft as racing pigeons?
Steve0 Posted December 2, 2007 Report Posted December 2, 2007 Only problem i can see is cross matings other than that cant see any problems. But i would'nt keep say a Kormoner with racers as they could get bullied.
lawrie Posted December 2, 2007 Author Report Posted December 2, 2007 so there wouldnt be any fighting, would it be better to pair the fancy pigoen with another pouter? would i need a hood to catch other pouters or would the birds use the door/sputnik to enter the loft?
Steve0 Posted December 2, 2007 Report Posted December 2, 2007 It will use the same trap as your racers and it will pair to a racer.
DOVEScot Posted December 2, 2007 Report Posted December 2, 2007 Our runts even use the same traps, get a similar mate for it and keep it happy, or a racer your not fussy about. We had two spare runt cocks and paired them up to racers as they were chasing everything else. Glad you say we now have two female runts for them
homer Posted December 2, 2007 Report Posted December 2, 2007 bullying can be a problem !! put a pair of show kings (big birds) in with racers and they will take over the joint !!! think u wil be ok with your pouter tho.
gangster Posted December 2, 2007 Report Posted December 2, 2007 ive got a few pouters..horsemans of my lads lodging with a few racers no problems...
lawrie Posted December 2, 2007 Author Report Posted December 2, 2007 would the pouters be let out at the same time as the racers?
gangster Posted December 2, 2007 Report Posted December 2, 2007 i wont as he wants to play with the pouters, ill help him with using 1 or 2 of my hens to catch.......but you can cross them to increase there flying ability....
chickadee Posted December 2, 2007 Report Posted December 2, 2007 Hi, im new to this forum and thought i would start with a daft question. is it ok to keep say a pouter pigeon in the same loft as racing pigeons? We have racing pigeons and fancy pigeons in the same loft and they all get on really well. (sometimes a bit too well). ;D
lawrie Posted December 2, 2007 Author Report Posted December 2, 2007 so its best to let them fly at different times? and use racing hens/cocks for the pouters to practice on? i was thinking of getting a rabbit hutch and using that instead of my racing loft. would a rabbit hutch be ok for a pair of pouters?

As long as its waterproof it'll be fine.
lawrie Posted December 2, 2007 Author Report Posted December 2, 2007 it would be water proof. do you let your fancy birds and racers mate? what type of chicks do they have? (fancy birds or racing birds or a bit of both)? i have just finnished building my loft and need to put pigeons in it. waiting to get YB for the new YB season. but might get a pair of pouters in the mean time, got a spare rabbit hutch that i can use.

We don't race pigeons, but, we have some racing pigeons in with our fancy birds, one of our runts has had young with a racer and it looks just like a racer, the garden fantails never pair up wi racers, but, we've had racers and homers paired up, and they looked like racers also, don't know what they would be like to race though, wouldn't chance it. We have kept a pair of fancy birds in a rabbit hutch and they always went back to the hutch at night so they must have liked it, and they got their privacy away from the rest o the birds.

I think i would be looking at the size of the rabbit hutch there are some big Pouters out there
Guest Posted December 3, 2007 Report Posted December 3, 2007 http://www.angelfire.com/ia/npcc/ Pouters are among the oldest of pigeons breeds. Pouters are among the tallest of pigeons and these slim birds can stand around sixteen inches tall on their very long legs. They carry themselves upright--in a manner reminscent of the Runner Ducks--and their globe or crop balloons out in front of them Just my opinion but I think i would be checking the size of the Rabbit hutch I was going to keep them in just to save any discomfort to the Pigeons.
lawrie Posted December 3, 2007 Author Report Posted December 3, 2007 so is it better to keep them in with the racers and still continue to train the racers as normal, letting the pouters out at different times? they are tall birds, how big would a pen be?
