jordanp31 Posted May 29, 2006 Report Posted May 29, 2006 hi i recently got a new pair of cock birds off my mate so that i could make up some pairs with the spair hen s in my loft. They were older birds so i new they would be hard to break to my loft. My mate who has been in pigeons for years cut the wing feathers for me...When i mean cut the wing feathers i mean cut the 'fluff' of the stem of the feathers leaving the bare quill. It worked very well and i let the birds out after a week and they never flew more than 20 meters from the loft. The only problem is i now want them flying to their full capability so how can i get the full feathers back... will new feathers come through during the moult or will i hve to pull all of the cut feathers out??? thanks alot
carl Posted May 29, 2006 Report Posted May 29, 2006 You will have to just let the birds go through there moult and hopefully they should be settled ok
peterpau Posted May 29, 2006 Report Posted May 29, 2006 Don't pull 'em afraid you'll just have to wait
Guest beautyhomer Posted May 29, 2006 Report Posted May 29, 2006 it takes about 8 weeks for a flight to grow back after pulling it
peterpau Posted May 30, 2006 Report Posted May 30, 2006 Pulling feathers is a lot more painfull than cutting the skin open.
Guest shadow Posted May 30, 2006 Report Posted May 30, 2006 Pulling feathers could cause blood quills leave them to moult out.
jordanp31 Posted May 31, 2006 Author Report Posted May 31, 2006 when is the moult in england?? will the feaher moult out for definate because i have left the quill untouched... thanks for the infomation...
peterpau Posted June 1, 2006 Report Posted June 1, 2006 Moult starts generaly this time of year, and will carry on till late Autumn. Mine have just started / starting. In reality they moult all year. They start nearest the body first, so the feathers farthest away from the body, will be last but, it will happen in time. GLAD YOU'VE LEFT WELL ALONE
Bob Wires Posted June 3, 2006 Report Posted June 3, 2006 Besides cutting feathers down, what other methods have fanciers found successful for breaking off older stock birds
peterpau Posted June 4, 2006 Report Posted June 4, 2006 Old stock go in the stock pen. Given up with that now only buy squeekers. At least you can test them that way
