jordanp31 Posted June 19, 2006 Report Posted June 19, 2006 i have just read a previos thread and have noticed that it said something about having more than 2 eggs under a bird. I have a problem in my loft at the moment and i was wondering if it is ok to put 3-4 eggs under a bird or will it put them off the eggs they are already sat on...? please help ;D
bluey Posted June 19, 2006 Report Posted June 19, 2006 They will sit and try to hatch as many eggs as they can cover, this is sometimes done to try and motivate natural racers. Do not try and let the "parents" try to rear more than two young birds it would only put undue stress on old and young birds.
Mike Lycett Posted June 19, 2006 Report Posted June 19, 2006 You can dencourage hens to sit 3-4 eggs but certainly not rear more than two
jimmy white Posted June 20, 2006 Report Posted June 20, 2006 i have added eggs to a sitting yb to make it keener as it spends its time trying to tuck them under it, but would never let any bird rear more than two, i would prefer a yb sitting on its first ybs about 3 days old with the cock taken away, especialy for the distant yb race

slatey Posted June 20, 2006 Report Posted June 20, 2006 if its for motavation reasons try a chicken egg with pigeon eggs . evan if you give it a youngun still leave the chicken egg with them works a treat with ybs. tomo
jordanp31 Posted June 20, 2006 Author Report Posted June 20, 2006 Its not for motivation purposes its just because i hav had a spare egg laid on the floor and i just wanted it to hatch... By the way how long can a pigeon leave an egg without it 'dying'??? I have thrown the egg out anyway because it got dented... thanks for the advice...
jimmy white Posted June 20, 2006 Report Posted June 20, 2006 if the parent birds have sat on the eggs and started to incubate them, the eggs would not last more than a day or two, but if their layed and never been sat on [never started incubating] the eggs will last a couple of weeks if turned regular, and kept on the cool side
